Ugh, apparently added height wouldn't make Beach & Howe project any more beautiful. That design for Melbourne is horrible looking, yet structually interesting.

With all due respect, Hed, I find the designs for both the city in China, as well as the one for Melbourne, overpowering and rather grotesque.

Height isn't everything, nor is departing from the "norm" as wildly as possible.

I've cited it before, but Stockholm Sweden is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, yet is definitely low-to-mid-rise. The "highrises" downtown there average 18 storeys, yet the city has a landscape riddled with wood-lined waterways, combined with both ancient and ultra modern architecture that create a sense of urban harmony rarely found.

I wish we could get away from this "the higher, the better; the more bizarre, the better," and go for stuff that is more understatedly elegant.

This one reminds me a lot of the Rogers Arena Tower - with a nicer lobby.

Would you be so kind to share with us a few photo's of these highrises that you mention?

I wouldn't regard your opinion if it were the last on these forums. You and Leftcoaster laud every single piece of inspid garbage built in this city.

Haven't got an uploader, but the pictures you just posted are examples (one looks like a colossal 🞵🞵🞵 toy); the Taipei Tower is the Oscar-winner for tastelessness, IMO, the Burj Dubai is reaching outer space dimensions and style; the Petronas Towers in KL are singularly ugly; and one only need go back a few pages in this thread to find some good-looking buildings AND some top-heavy grotesqueries.

In defense of Jlousa, while he and I often disagree on points, I consider that he has great taste in many things; as an example he likes Stockholm and Montreal, both of which, IMO, are two of the smartest-looking cities in the world.
(oh and please; Let's be polite about all this please, ladies and gentlemen.)

Stockholm and Montreal are beautiful because of their historic architecture - which can't be compared to today's modern structures

I have to also disagree with you regarding the Petronas towers, which in my opinion are two of the most beautiful post modern towers. For arguments sake though, lets agree to disagree.

There is obviously room for all kinds of architectural expression in this world.
Franky, I love big, bold, and bizarre, as well as harmonious, understated, and small-scale.

Also Stockholm has it's share of "the higher, the better; the more bizarre, the better;" as demonstrated by the hideous Victoria Tower. Granted, it's not located in Downtown, but I really hope that such a tower never gets proposed in Vancouver...

Not everything bold or modern is "bad." I think the buildings to the right in post 293 on page 15 of this thread are sleek. They're in Abu Dhabi.

The massing of the Victoria Tower isn't great but I love the glazing.
