It is still impressive and I recommend that people still have a look at it. It is unique for a poplar to have that "grand" elm-like structure. It almost looks fake in person - like a tree that has been enlarged in scale, without the bark size takes into consideration. The bark "chunks" are massive.

So that tree at the top of this page is the one the city considers the largest? this one seems to dwarf that one.

I think this tree should be protected beyond how it is already. There is a tree in Mexico that is one of the largest in the world and people come from all over to come see it. Would it be too much for the city of Calgary to protect this one tree?

I always thought that tree seemed huge driving down memorial, interesting that it's actually the largest in town. Didn't you say it had a plaque or something too?

Here is a pic of the one in Crescent Heights Park. The form of the tree is outstanding and looks more like an oak.

The tree along memorial drive (in the backyard) is just so much larger and it is really difficult to get a sense of the scale in pictures so I dont have an image of it.

Very cool tree. Not the biggest looking though. If ever you want to check out some gnarly old river poplars in town there's a grove of them south of 22x and sicome lake that are pretty interesting. For a long time it was an off-leash dog park area, but then blue devil golf course moved in so now you can't drive up to it anymore. You can however walk or bike to it. There's one really old tree that's charred and hollowed out from a lightning strike. Also of interest nearby are authentic teepee rings. They're off the main area away from the poplars but really cool. I haven't been there since it's been closed off but I imagine they are still intact as the golf course is a ways away from it.

My turn. Went on a photo walk with my friend on Sunday evening, played with his nice 35mm f/1.8 prime (I have since purchased my own). Still working my way through the 200 odd photos I took, but this one turned out rather nice and required very little tweaking:
