Never mind fire trucks, just traffic in general! That's a tough merge. You either have to go for it or creep out and not merge properly. I used to drive that every morning and there were a couple close calls.
Looking at the route 90 study recommended improvements here:

It shows a fourth lane being added to both bridges, but only 3 lanes coming from the north (no room for a fourth lane under Portage without removing the massive retaining walls). So maybe they will actually be allowing the people coming from eastbound Portage to southbound route 90 a full lane with no merging!
