i think the pic is more of the Jets flag hanging over portage ave on jets game days. i thought it was pretty funny at 4pm, everything stops, the crane is swung over portage, and everyone heads home to watch the game! lol

It allows you to visualize how ALT will fit into the skyline from various angles, just like the rest of his shots in that post.

They don't miss a beat either. That happens every time there is a home game. I love it, that only highlights the amount of home based pride we have.

I am surprised TSN doesn't take advantage of that for a shot during the game. Some of the shots they choose make the city look pretty sad.

Way down Portage in the middle of nowhere, and way down Pembina. NO shots of our gems. I don't think I have ever seen a shot of le cathedrale de St. Boniface. Sorry for the rant.

That's funny but true. I know in Calgary they will use a tower crane to build a 7-11. But then again they have an abundance of tower cranes and experienced operators available.

I recently spoke to one of the project managers of a current project using one and they had said they may have to look to Minnesota for a crane and operator. We need more highrises to drive up the demand and thus supply.

It is baffling.

We are probably the only place on earth that builds a football stadium without tower cranes (and then blame delays on high winds rendering the trawler cranes useless).

We built a 10+storey condo building on Wellington cres., on the river no less, with a trawler crane. Calgary would have had 4 tower cranes for that project alone.

Another surprising one to me was the new UofW science building on Portage. I thought for sure that one would get a tower crane too.

Either way, it is interesting how much some of us (including me) signify the use of a tower crane as how big or important a project is. It may be true, but Winnipeg seems to be the exception to the rule.

A couple of years ago I was driving south on route 90 right around where it goes under Portage Ave. I could hear the fire truck coming at a fast rate and constantly blasting the horn in addition to the sierns. Due to the layout of the road I could not tell where they were coming from. As I was in the right lane already I stopped just before the yield that brings Portage traffic onto southbound route 90. Sure enough the truck comes charging down the yield and side swipes the car in the lane next to me that failed to yield. The fire truck didn't stop and I sure hope the driver of the car got slapped with a ticket for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle if they dared to even try and claim the damage from that accident.

That said, I would imagine with the location of the new fire station if additional warning signals are not put in place for south bound traffic on route 90 there are going to be many more similar accidents.

I think you just made an excellent point. There is no merge lane there, and nothing can be done about it until there is any significant bridge capacity expansion (part of the Kenaston widening project to happen ... ever?). So, perhaps a big sign with blinking red lights that say "WATCH FOR FIRETUCKS MERGING WHEN BLINKING" might be a good idea for southbound Portgage when a fire truck is being dispatched.

Heh interesting story -- about the only time I would think a hit and run is justified -- fire truck responding to an emergency!
