I agree. More Pixel's and Ven's and Osteria De Medici's. I don't see Sunnyside / Kensignton / Hillhurst ever matching the Beltline in terms of height, but I think they could add some awesome density in smalelr developments like these.

That Calgary is a young city cannot be emphasized enough. Keep in mind that while most cities in the eastern half of NA are in their third or fourth development cycle, a lot of inner city Calgary especially north of the river/downtown still has the original structure standing. The normal pattern is the first cycle is a small house, the second cycle is maybe rowhouse or modest commercial, the third cycle is walkup or larger commercial...you get the idea.

Most original structures in Calgary were built at a time when nobody in their right mind would have envisioned the city growing to be what it is today. Add in the fact that most of the growth occured after the streetcar fell out of favour and it is what it is.

You really have to understand a bit of the history to come to terms with the state of things. The interesting thing is in a young city such as Calgary or even Vancouver you get to see history (as in what occured in eastern NA one or two hundred years ago) happening now.

I totally disagree, that area of the city is dead at night, being the legislature, and surrounded by government offices. Without the lighting it would be a blight on the harbour at night. Doesn't look tacky to me at all, especially compared to the lighting on CN tower or at Niagra falls....

So, what, the only alternative is darkness? This is how you light up an elegant building at night:

The CN Tower or Niagara Falls aren't dignified, Baroque Revival structures. Animated LED lighting works on a modern skyscraper. Monotone Christmas lights don't work on anything.

I love the lighting of the CN Tower, it's something they should have done years ago.

I'm almost sad that the space between le 1000 and le 1250 is going to be filled in by 2 50 storey towers. I like the breeziness of the skyline in that shot. I really spot lights the different skyscrapers.

Well yes. A jagged skyline that allows a few of the tallest buildings to stand out tends to look better. But that wouldn't have been a problem if those office towers had been allowed to be 50m taller. This current building boom is really going to intensify the table-toping effect caused by the height limit.
