Interesting, and will definitely be a step up from what currently exists in Liberty Village. The views from east-facing units will undoubtedly be spectacular and don't stand much of a chance of ever being blocked.

That Dundonald (it must be Dundonald and not Donlands, no?) proposal is also pretty solid. Reminds me a bit of 70 University.

Longueuil is going ahead with its planned cultural centre, which will house the Longueuil Symphony Orchestra and the Théâtre de la Ville. It will be located on the southern side of Saint Charles Street, opposite the Université de Sherbrooke. They are apparently determined to make this an architecturally attractive building with good accoustics.

TODAY in Montreal, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal presents its Strategic Forum on Greater Montréal and its major projects real estate and urban renewal.


We are expecting updates from major known projects such as l'Avenue, and significant announcements, such as Cadillac Fairview's plans for the lands SOUTH of the bell centre.

Developer Plans to Create Huge Downtown Hub

MONTREAL — Long believing that Montreal’s downtown core has nowhere to go but south, Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. is to unveil a long-term development plan Friday for its vast tracts of land below the Bell Centre.

The 10- to 15-year plan, worth up to $2 billion, would transform parts of St. Antoine St. south of the Bell Centre into a hub of commercial and residential projects with as much as 5 million square feet of developable space, real estate sources told The Gazette. Depending on market demand, Toronto-based Cadillac Fairview is said to be looking at developing at least a handful of new buildings over several years, including condos.

Already, the Toronto-based real-estate arm of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, along with partner Canderel Group, are considering a second phase of their sold-out Tour des Canadiens tower adjacent to the Bell Centre, The Gazette has learned.

A spokesperson for Cadillac Fairview declined to comment this week; the developer’s plan is among several major real estate projects being presented Friday at the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. At a previous board of trade conference in 2011, Sal Iacono, a company senior vice-president, described the developer’s intention to push the “edge of downtown to new territories” in Montreal, as it did in Toronto with the building of the mixed-use Maple Leaf Square around the Air Canada Centre.

Cadillac Fairview’s latest venture comes at a time when the low-interest-rate fuelled housing boom and the city’s push for increased residential development is transforming parking lots and old industrial sites into condos. Areas like Griffintown, located south of Montreal’s traditional downtown core, are now emerging as rapidly growing residential neighbourhoods.

Between 2006 and 2008, Cadillac Fairview spent $150 million to assemble and purchase an L-shaped site, stretching from St. Antoine St. between just west of de la Montagne St. to Peel St. in the east. At the edge of Peel, the company’s site runs south and east of an existing condo development, down to around St. Jacques St.

“There’s only so much available land in downtown Montreal to develop on and this is the corridor where it’s going to be happening,” Iacono told The Gazette in 2011.

New commercial and residential activity south of the Bell Centre is good for Montreal’s downtown because it will drive more traffic into existing businesses, said André Poulin, general manager of Destination Centre-Ville, which represents 8,000 companies.

“It’s a very logical step,” Poulin said of Cadillac Fairview’s site.

For those not familiar with the Bell centre development frenzy, to the right (north) is where all the current condo towers are starting to rise (Roccabella, Icone, Avenue, Canadiens) and to the left (south) is where CF has big plans.

Wow! A Second Tour Des Canadiens? That is excellent! Hopefully the second tower wouldn't have to have so much parking.

I'm curious as to where this alleged second tower is going to rise? The first tower is already stretching it by building on a tiny lot, formerly the entrance to a busy commuter train station / Public square (dedicated to the Habs centennial no less). Perhaps this second tower will echo the original plans and build literally onto the bell centre. This plan proposed to build 15 floors of condo onto the Bell centre, which is 10 storeys tall, so 25. Otherwise there's a gas station across the street, but I suspect this busy gas station ain't going nowhere.

That is Hamilton's old Federal building, 5 storey addition to the top.

It's really nice inside, all marble slab floors and walls, well at least on the main floor.
