I'm not convinced the green panels are the final layer. It looks to be like that silver, metal framework protrudes farther than the green panels so there's probably something else to snap into place on top of them.

Possibly, but it looks shiny, so I think it is the finished product. The colour is reflective of the historical context of the older university buildings, so it's a nice touch in that way.

I feel like I've just been found out, even though it's not a bad thing...

I took it from Signal Hill. It was zoomed in as close as I could go (250), and this is also cropped closely, showing only about 1/4 of the original photo.

That is a long way off, great zoom. I have trouble just knowing that they are building all these hotels in some of the most uninviting commercial areas.

Capital Saying Good-Bye to Garbage Nets

Quote:
Residents of St. John's may no longer have to worry about covering their garbage up with nets. The capital city is exploring the use of an automated garbage collection system. Neighbouring Mount Pearl boasts that the garbage collection system there is working, and they have decided to make the switch to automated collection permanent. VOCM's Ariana Kelland reports.

The public works committee is recommending that the city move to automated garbage collection this year by approving over $1.2 million dollars for outfitting collection trucks and purchasing 4000 carts. Phase two would cost over $3.6 million dollars to purchase the remaining 43,000 carts needed. There are still many details that need to be ironed out, like who would cover the cost of the program - would it be through general revenue or would the city choose to tack on a separate fee for the service. It is noted in the minutes of the public works meeting that residents in the downtown area and other densely populated areas would be exempt from the program.

Automated collection is being used in communities in Labrador, Mount Pearl and in many municipalities across North America. Automated collection cuts down on the number of injuries to collectors and makes their work significantly safer. The system is known to be an efficient, effective, clean and rodent-free way to collect garbage. The proposal will go before council this evening.

So what's the difference? Bins and trucks that lift and dump bins?

The automated systems require less manpower, are cleaner, are generally more convenient for homeowners, and just look civilized. It's one of those things, like underground hydro lines, that really elevates your impression of a city. And we are VERY far behind as far as garbage collection goes. I've never seen the set-up we currently have anywhere else.

Is there any hope St. John's will switch to a normal, FIXED date garbage schedule? Two things that absolutely drive me insane in town are the always changing garbage day, and the rabid residential parking enforcement.

Maybe it has changed since I lived in St. John's last (2.5 years), but they always switched the day after a holiday... which meant it was always changing. Garbage collectors get a lot more holidays than I do

Every other town/City I've ever lived in had collection on the same day every week. Maybe St. John's is the same now, but it wasn't when I last lived there.

No if they could only hold the leash tighter on the parking enforcement...

from my understanding at least in my area, it comes every Wednesday and every second Wednesday they also pick up the recycling, when holidays happen they put out a notice and it comes the day after the holiday instead, then back to normal Wednesdays the week after

Ok It's changed then... it used to be on a Wednesday, for example, until there was a holiday (the holiday could fall on any day of the week and still bump the collection day), which would switch it to Thursday. It would remain Thursday until the next holiday, which would bump it to Friday.

I am pretty sure they changed to alternate dates because the gulls caught on to the schedule and were tearing up the garbage and making a huge mess (no joke). I would think they could consider returning to normal scheduling if we get bins though.
