What was formerly known as Tower Gardens on Broadway and Winnipeg (I forget what its new name is), was originally planned to be three - 10 storey buildings to have been built along Broadway. Only the one was built.

Also, on Rae St in the south end there are those four dark brown brick - 6 storey apartment buildings (now condos) that were known as Woodcrest Village. The plan was for a 5th building at the south end which was to have book-ended the complex with this building turned 90 degrees to the middle three - the same way the most northerly building is turned 90 degrees.

And just a block away where the Westfield Twins are (those two six storey condos on Gordon and Rae, they were originally planned to have been around 12 floors.

A lot of this was due to the economy of the day. Had it been as buoyant as it is now I am sure these would have all been completed.
I believe the Sask Energy Building (Wascana Energy at the time?) on Vic and Broad was supposed to have a twin built across Broad Street where the parking lot is now, but they were bought out and moved to Calgary.

There has been skepticism on whether or not the construction at the UofR was for new residences or not but from a friend of mine who lives in the language arts building was told by one of the resident officials that it is a student housing being constructed. Mentioned all survey and design plans have been finished and are ready to go. Good news!!!

I suspect that there provincial budget will include money for these and maybe we'll then get to see the design plans shortly there after. But the government is also talking about cutting back so who knows, fingers crossed this one gets the money to go ahead.

The pitch mechanism is itself bolted to the hub. The hub is fixed to the rotor shaft which drives the generator through a gearbox. Direct drive wind turbines (also called gearless) are constructed without a gearbox. Instead, the rotor shaft is attached directly to the generator, which spins at the same speed as the blades. Source Wikipedia , the blades will add some height also .
Thanks for the correction. As far as installing, there are two different ways,1, is by lifting the full hub (including 3 blades)= more weight bigger crane or separate. the blades will be installed horizontal. As far a crane go, the most common crane will be around the 600 to 750 ton range with Derrick (aka super lift) that will in crease capacity at greater radios. I can not tell on till i see some pictures off the crane to so what type it is. A type/identification plate is commonly found at the control cab or close to it.

If any one is interested in how a wind turbine is in stalled, look at the link. The crane is a 750 ton Lattice boom crane from liebherr. http://forums.dhsdiecast.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=134179&p=4

Or check my Youtube channel to see what a crawler crane is.

To be fair though, last year was way above anything we've seen in Regina for quite some time (I don't know enough about Saskatoon's market to comment on that), and even where we are now, it's well above the recent norms. Also, could the milder winter last year have contributed to more starts in the winter months?

Neither is changing a mall slot from an Aldo to a Sephoraaaa!!!! - Its great that you have trendy places to buy perfume, but I wouldn't consider it development.

Although I don't live in Saskatoon anymore - I remember the downtown and Broadway as vibrant and enticing - it just doesn't seem to be attracting development as in increased population density living downtown - which I totally don't get?
I would counter, what is Regina's obsession with towers. Personally I would rather have a bunch of midrises that have active retails fronts and make the downtown more walkable and vibrant vs our towers which have absolutely no retail on the ground floor. Even the new downtown tower looks nice from far but up close they typically chose to go with no real retail. IMO if you added retail to the street level of existing buildings and hi-rises, it would do a lot more for downtown then adding another tower or two with a boring podiums. The only new buildings I wanna see built that helps downtown grow are mixed-use residential.

Question: what is Treesplease constant negative comments about Saskatoon all about, If he doesn't like the place or thinks it isn't developing don't worry about it. Stay of the Saskatoon forum. A true booster of Saskatchewan would be proud of everything that's developing here, opinions have their place but man, give it a rest.

I spent many years in Saskatoon and like the place alot and want to see it do as good as it deserves to do. I just wish people would post more about it more. Winnipeg has its own retail thread - given the interest and level of activity, maybe Saskatoon should have its own retail thread as well.

Ya I would have to agree with Spictacular Mclovin. We seem to be way to focused on simply having nice towers, then creating a vibrant downtown. It saddens me that Harvard is kicking out greenspot again to build another tower. We don't have that many nice cafes downtown, and the one consistent one we do have has been forced to move multiple times. What this city needs badly is an entertainment area, with a consistent row of retail that is walkeable and lively all throughout the day. The putting up of these towers, which I agree are beautiful and a definite symbol for the city, has restricted a possible retail centric street/area. This large buildings do bring people to the area for work, but with minimal ammenities, what's the point. I truly believe that the RRI, in the current cp rail yards, is make or break. We need that to be an area of retail, dining and entertainment. This is our last hope for a truly vibrant downtown area. I also think a theatre is needed, or some type of nightlife draw beyond a bar. I really wish we could attract more stores, like Saskatoon has been able to do, and a properly developed area such as the cp land is a great opportunity to do so. Retail is more important for the health of a city and it's quality of life than towers. As it stand Saskatoon has better retail, more nightlife, and a more vibrant downtown. These are key reasons why it's growing faster and is more attractive to immigrants. The RRI is a huge opportunity to make Dowtown Regina an attractive place to be for all ages, and potential investors!
