I work in the Haultain Building downtown and I just found out this week that it was sold along with the old Credit Union building next door and the owners are tight lipped about who bought it, but it is rumoured that a hotel is what will be built there after demolition in the fall! Anyone know more or what brand?

I'd almost bet that its the same person who built Discovery Plaza (was it North Prairie??) Maybe they are speculating and see a big possibility with BHP.

I'll second that bet. I'd expect to see an office building going up at the corner of 3rd Avenue & 22nd Street in the relatively near future (after the BHP Jansen project is officially confirmed as proceeding).

Milestones could a crucial anchor to get construction on that retail development going. Wow, think of all the restaurants and lounges rumoured/confirmed/recently opened on 2nd Avenue. It's a real hot spot!

The Haultain Building and Affinity property combined make a fair sized chunk of land. And with one buyer, I'd expect a multi-phase project. Maybe hotel/office, or an office development with a twin to be added down the road?

You could be right. The ALT rumour has been swirling. I heard something about them maybe going on Idylwyld near Midtown.

A more refined rendering of 240 Fourth. This is going to be a nice building.

Commuter bridge divides residents

BY CHARLES HAMILTON, THE STARPHOENIX MARCH 6, 2013

People at a busy public meeting Wednesday night were divided on the city’s proposal to build a $86-million commuter bridge in the city’s northeast.

“It will take care of some of the residents who commute to the north end, but it doesn’t take care of any of the heavy traffic,” said Agnes Hyde, one of more than 100 people who attended the open house.

The city estimates the north commuter bridge and connecting roadways will cost $141 million and under an “aggressive” timeline could see it open as early as 2016.

The new bridge, which will function similarly to the Broadway and University bridges, will carry up to 30,000 vehicles per day. While people like Agnes — and many others at the meeting — believe the city should be focusing its energy on building a perimeter highway bridge further north to help deal with heavy traffic that cuts through the middle of the city, many residents of the area say the commuter bridge could be answer to their daily traffic snarls.

“I’m not the kind of guy to whine, but I honestly think this is more important than what they did on the south end,” said Blair Simister, referring to the Circle Drive South bridge project, which should be completed this summer.

It should start this year. It's already partially pre-leased by the First Nations Bank of Canada, so I believe that it's a go.

According to an article in the Star Phoenix Martensiville will be home to a Canalta hotel, Second Cup, DQ, Little Ceasar's and a Pharmasave sooner than later. It is an impressive array of chain stores for the city.

With this development along with what Warman has in the works, I am really curious to see how those two cities will look in the next 3-5 years.

As for the the big city, I know it has been said on here at least once and probably more, but 2nd ave is shaping up to be awesome. I am not going to list all the options, but there are plenty and I love it. One of them is Bon Temps which is what I had thought was going to be Crawdaddy's but, no dice on the name, still a cajun place and it should be open in April sometime.

Also, why is the prevailing opinion that BHP will build something at the spot of the old Affinity building? Do they already own something there? I'm certainly not opposed to them building an impressive HQ there but if not, I would like to see them just become the main tenants of the River Centre II and maybe they can have a sky walk built to the River Centre since they lease much of that building too. I may be stretching a bit, but I would love to see some sky walks built!

Most likely becuase thier current landlord had bid on the Affinity property adjacent to their current office on 3rd. It would allow their new office to be either built contiguous with their existing building or joined to it by a skywalk.

Interesting story, it will be a huge re leave to all the truck traffic at the rush hour times. This way you will be getting 70% or more out of the city and send them direct to Regina. Another thing that i see an increase of, it fuel trucks who come thought Saskatoon from Regina going on Hwy 16. This will both take away stress and danger from an big explosions if one of those trucks may crash. I am all for this project personally.

Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan

Looks like construction of the new art gallery is imminent.

I attended a play at Persephone Theatre tonight. In the program, there was a notice that read:

"Dear Persephone Theatre Patron,

We have received official notice from the City of Saskatoon that the parking lot behind our building is closed as of March 6th so that construction of the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan can begin."

This bridge will be a commuter bridge not meant for heavy truck traffic which will use a future perimeter bridge and circle drive bridges.

Just for the record I am against this bridge. Sure there is some traffic issues at peak times but people can be more creative with their commute. We can't maintain the bridges we have now and are adding another one.

Spending the money on better transit routes would be of better use. I don't want to see my tax dollars go to a bridge that will save someone a few minutes on their commute. Let's make it a toll bridge for those that really want it.
