The City is leasing a volumetric area underground under the Georgia Viaduct for construction of the Rogers Arena apartment (south) tower parkade.

The plans show exclusion of the volumes occupied by the existing column supports of the Georgia Viaduct - but the terms provide for relocation of fibre optic cables from the viaduct through the parkade (i.e. following demolition) and access during demolition of the viaduct.

Interesting to see the 'Georgia Steps' in the rendering also.
One would think that showing the Georgia steps and the new turn out would bode well for the future of the viaducts. (I still hope that at least this viaduct is retained, if not both of them, but that's for another thread.)

If you don't want any of them demolished then you should say it and not compromise for the sake of compromising. Stand your ground behind your beliefs and don't allow someone else to chip away at them.

I agree that it doesn't make sense as it looks like a complete waste of space. Why not just add a pullout to the road without a island? The only benefit I see in this is more privacy for VIP's and what not but unless your in a limo then that's what the underground parking should be for. I am open to other ideas why a island is needed that wastes at least 10sq meters of space (estimate).

You need a lay-by for easy access curbside for couriers (parcels that are not bikeable) i.e. Iron Mountain boxes, catering deliveries (sandwich platters), etc. I don't think there's space for that at the Expo Blvd level.

The island is probably there to force cars into more of a 90 degree entry rather than just drifting into a lane with 80km/h cars speeding along.

It appears from the rendering that there will be a gate that allows for that vehicle access to be converted to part of the sidewalk during events.

I think they look great on this building. Gives it a much cleaner look. I just hope they choose the same color glass for the balconies that they have on the office portion.

I like this one a lot.
I like the look of the residential section and how it contrasts with the office part.
I love the integration with the viaduct.

The version with the balcony alcoves was more recent than the continuous balcony version as far as I know and both would have been in the Rogers (vs GM) era.

Aquilini Development and Construction has commenced construction of the west tower of its three-tower office/residential development located around Rogers Arena. When completed, the west tower will include110,760 sf of office space in the lower half of the building (up to level 12). Aquilini Investment Group and the Vancouver Canucks may take up to four floors in the west tower. Occupancy of the office space is set for mid 2014 with building construction wholly complete by the end of 2014. The development also includes an additional 69,330 sf of office space in the east tower, which still awaits a development permit. Construction is anticipated to start on the east (and south) towers in July 2013 with completion slated for fall 2015.

^What is that on the RHS of the tower nearest to the camera POV, on the lower half? Floor-to-ceiling greenery? Could it be a living wall? Is that mandated in the design plans?

The most amazing parts of these renders is how they are able to build in and around the viaducts! Wow, almost as if they are not impeding development at all...

FCUK these green walls. Anyone with one-tenth of a brain could tell you that wall would only be serviceable with an unlimited bank account.
