Fantastic! Looks like the UDP nailed this one.

In the minutes for the Jan 30th UDP Meeting (Link)
for the west tower, it says, "Interior and exterior alterations to change the office uses on the 13th through 24th floors to residential units."

So it looks like they were only considering the amendments to those floors, not reviewing the entire building like the were for the other two towers:

Description: To construct a new 28-storey tower (East Tower) at the south east corner of the existing arena, including renovations to the existing building.

Description: To construct a new 31-storey tower (South Tower) south of the Georgia Viaduct over five levels of underground parking, including stairs to level 100 of the arena.

Five levels of underground parking? Wonder if any of the is public or not. All the ground level parking lots around the arena is slated for redevelopment (that is if Concord ever decides to finally go ahead with their long promised development to the east of the Casino/Former Plaza of Nations site).

Ugh, I hate those porthole things. Otherwise they look pretty good. The West tower is pretty fantastic.

I think you mean South Tower. The West Tower is the former office tower.

Looks like an example of "keep it simple" - the South Tower is the simplest design, and looks the best of the 3 towers. The Wst and East Towers have too may "add-ons" and kitschy elements.

The only real complaint I have on the South Tower is the "Post-It Note" yellow on the columns - it's too light a colour to look sturdy enough to anchor or support the tower and cheapens the effect (like it's being held up by cheap plastic supports).

When will the first tower be completed? Is the first tower the one to have the rumoured sports bar or will that come with the subsequent towers?

honestly, i think the last thing that plaza/area needs is the dead zone of a painted concrete tower base. it's a nice design for a different locale, but i think here, anchoring this new space, it needs major ground floor retail space, maybe even over two levels.

Disappointed that the building-integrated photovoltaic panels seem to be absent from the final design. That was an exciting part of the project for me when it made its way to the UDP for a preliminary workshop. Building-integrated PV means utilizing these panels in lieu of spandrel panels, metal wall panels, etc., in order to lower the cost of the installation and improve the aesthetics of the end product.

Otherwise, it's good to see these projects moving forward, and I am happy that there is fair amount of employment space included in the building programs. I am not happy that there will be fewer concerts booked once the build-out is complete. That's a real loss for the city, though I think that a handful of the big, big shows may choose to scale up to BC Place. The trouble is that there are very few venues in the city that fill the gap between the mid-sized venues like the Orpheum, Queen Elizabeth, the PNE Forum, and The Centre for the Performing Arts, and the very large venues like The Coliseum, Rogers Arena, and BC Place. I wonder whether the UBC Winter Sports arena (officially, the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena) may start getting more bookings for concerts if booking dates decline for Rogers Arena. It's way, way out of the way by comparison to downtown venues, but it's got a concert capacity of 5,800, plenty of parking, and good bus transit within a reasonable 15-minute walk of the venue. I would also imagine that the Coliseum would receive more bookings, though it's got the worst transit access of any large venue in the city. I also wonder whether the envisioned Canucks practice facility and rink/community centre on Canadian Metropolitan Properties' Plaza of Nations land would be designed as an event and entertainment space.

Honestly, tower project next to stadiums in every other Canadian city are given screens, tickers, etc... all we get is number 8...

The Rogers Arena Gate 8 entrance look totally different in those renders (the 2nd one looks much better, hopefully that is what ends up happening).

Be happy with the 8. Word is the residents from across the street don't like viewing big numbers from their window, and are forming a protest to get it removed.
