I think the real solution to Moncton's Costco problems would be to open a Costco in Charlottetown

Gotta disagree with you there. From what I can see on their website, Halifax is the smallest city in the country to have two. Saskatoon, Victoria, Regina, Kitchener and Windsor - cities that are all between 2 and 2.5 times bigger than Moncton each only have 1.
Thanks for the welcome Myles, long time lurker, first time poster.
Very surprising those cities only have one, so doubt we would ever get 2.

Geographically, Halifax probably has two just due to how the cities have grown.

For similar reasons, I'm surprised KWC doesn't have a second Costco yet; if not a third; all three of the tricities could probably support one each.

Moncton doesn't have the same drives to support a second one so I'd expect them to move the current store instead of opening a second.

And yes, Charlottetown is probably overdue for its own Costco.

Not sure about Moncton or SJ but I remeber hearing the Fredericton Costco is 150,000 sq ft, not sure if that includes the gas bar or not. According to the Daily Gleaner when it opened a couple years ago it was the largest east of Quebec. I assume the SJ store is similar where they opened within a year of each other.

I do believe the SJ one is the largest east of MTL, if you count only the actual store.

Saint John is: 142,000
Dartmouth Crossing is 136,000
Moncton is: 132,645
Fredericton is: 146,000 including the gas bar.

I doubt that would ever happen considering the Trinity Superstore is right next door, and Atlantic Superstore and Wholesale Club are both owned by Loblaw.

Say that Costco moves out of its current location would the footprint of the OLd location be a prime spot for a The Bay or even Rona or even Lowes to move into Moncton. That is just my 5cents..

Rona or Lowe's, but not the Bay, the Bay stores are usually located in large suburban malls as anchors or in a downtown location, not as stand alone locations in big box developments. As for Rona, I don't hear great things about them lately, just check out the news regarding them...

Agreed.

Rona is downsizing in Canada and no longer doing big box stores. They seem to be aiming now for the same niche as Home Hardware.

The Bay is a typical downtown or suburban mall department store. It would be a major change in the philosophy of the company to consider a "big box" location. I suppose it might be possible as the Sears in Charlottetown is a standalone store, but I would prefer the Bay to return to downtown, possibly as part of the events centre development.

The best option on your list would be Lowe's. It would be in direct competition with Kent and Home Depot both in spitting distance. One has to wonder though how many big box home renovation and hardware stores the Moncton market can stand. I'm under the belief that the new Kent on Harrisville Blvd is being built partly as a pre-emptive strike against Lowe's. If Kent saturates the market, there might not be enough room for Lowe's......

I tend to think that if Costco moves, the current building would be levelled and a new retail strip built in it's place.

Even with Kent building a new store, I wonder if they might be interested in the Costco location/building? Shift over, get more space, have the true End of that commercial area, and be able to rent out/subdivide their old space to non-competitors.

It would truly be an epic fail to see any of those three move into that property, considering two of those companies are heading down the tubes fast and the other one would never happen due to having direct competition literally steps away.

Was at the Costco in Freddy this Saturday, have been their several times...it's very well laid out, much more modern...out near the TCH on the corner of Mapleton would be a wonderful location.

Don't even get me started about the gas bar...we got gas at the Costco in Freddy and it was a full 8.5 cents per litre cheaper than in Moncton. Here this would be an insane plus for Moncton residents it's just impossible to have it at their current location.

Again Atlantic Canada is an afterthought in the media. Target finally opened their first 3 stores in Ontario, all three had ''soft openings''. Stores will start to open progressively from now on. Anyway, I saw the coverage on CBC, CTV, Global just to name them and in all reports here's what was said.

Overall, the company is expected to open between 125 and 135 locations in Canada. After the Ontario rollout, Target will begin moving into provinces in the West and eventually into Quebec.

Just Google it. I don't blame Target, I blame the media.

I hate the mentality that everything stops after Quebec, I think that unfortunately we will always have that stigma over here.

Actually if all the media outlets (including CBC) said the same thing, then you can blame Target. Everyone else was probably quoting a media release Target made, so it was Target that forgot Atlantic Canada.

I don't care who omitted us, but it s****!
Then the question is? Why were we omitted in the first place or are we just opening in 2014, hence the omission...
I don't want to start a whole discussion about this, but I thought to add this observation.

Probably just the normal oversight/standard grouping of "Quebec == Eastern Canada". SJ's Target is being rebuilt now, Freddy's should start in a week or two, and that article shows that Target is willing to soft open the stores as soon as they're ready. So regardless, I suspect that as soon as our stores are ready, they'll open, no matter what the official "Opening Day" is.
