I think the St. John's proposals are as attractive as a lot of what I see being proposed and built in Vancouver and it's suburbs, so there !
They have setbacks with special treatment at the top so the skyline effect won't be totally boring. Also there is some nice treatment at the bottom, and there are 3 levels of indoor parking included. Remember they are designing for the Newfoundland climate, so there isn't going to be as much glass as you would have in Vancouver, or perhaps Toronto. Total height is supposed to be 58 metres.

They are in a mainly almost inner city suburban area mostly built in the 60s thru 80s, but with a few older buildings dating back much farther.

The Royal Connaught will have three new towers for neighbours. (KNY Architects)

So there are to be three towers beside and behind the Connaught – 36 storeys, 33 storeys, 24 storeys. They will fill all but a corner of the block bounded by Main, King, John and Catharine. There are to be 708 units in all.

There is still the possibility of a hotel component for the complex. But, as Harrison pointed out, "in Hamilton right now, residential is a reasonably easy sell."

Parking was a major challenge in the design. There will be two levels underground and seven camouflaged levels above, accessed from Catharine Street.

About 135 of the units will be in the old 12-storey Royal Connaught itself. Harrison assured the heritage committee that part of the project will be handled with great care.

"We’re not touching the brick work, we’re not touching the limestone," he said. There are issues with ventilation to the outside. When Harry Frost put up his showpiece in 1916, he made sure there were up-to-date elevators, telephones, brass beds. But he wasn’t worrying about bathroom exhaust vents.

All going well, the sales centre in the restored lobby will open by late summer.

Wow... congrats, Hamilton. Beyond jealous. This is one of those few projects where I not only think, "I wish we had something like that", but I think, "I wish we had EXACTLY that. Seriously. Put it on the corner of Job of Water."

LRT on the verge of being officially funded, this proposal, the casino, and possibly that Carmen hotel proposal... I think it's safe to say that Hamilton is booming, at least construction-wise.

Now that Roccabella is starting construction in less than week, it seems plausible that the other projects are going to get into gear as well. The race is on

Icône is set to break ground in april and Avenue is seing site prep right now. That leaves the Tour des Canadiens, but this one should start construction soon also, since It's already virtually sold out. Then there is the Deloitte tower now under construction. So that makes one 28 storeys office tower, two 40 storeys and two 50 storeys residential towers going up at the same time around the Bell Center. Five towers within three blocks of each other. Not bad.

Ground zero for the incoming boom. Icone (40+30), Roccabella (40+40), l'Avenue (50), Canadiens tower (50), YUL (38+38) and Drummond (23+21) project sites all visible here. I wish I had the capacity to use photoshop on this one....
