The building in the foreground is actually a senior's residence. Cheap looking, but at least it isn't a Résidence Soleil with a big clocktower.

What a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 shame about that Herald building. I absolutely despise those types of re-cladding operations. They might as well be demolitions.

While Montreal itself is a great city, for highrises it appears to have to worst burbs in the nation, definitely not taking note from Toronto and Vancouver.

For those who dont know, there are currently 12 buildings ranging from 100-175m either under construction or soon to be that will rise on the left side of the 1250 Rene-Levesque and will all appear from this view. 11 of them will be condos. The west end, which is currently a landscape riddled with parking lots and decrepit buildings will finally start to rise, 50 years after they razed it to the ground for this very purpose.

What's funny is that Verdun is generally not considered a suburban area. This was actually just some undeveloped land that they used for some very suburban-looking buildings. A block away, it's just a typical Montreal neighbourhood with triplexes.

We're still doing it here in Toronto. The art deco Concourse Building was built in 1928 and is one of the last intact office buildings of that era left in the city. The last occupants vacated a few days ago and 98% of the building will end up in a land fill in a few months time. 100 Adelaide West will rise in its place.

Barbarians. When that building comes down, a chunk of my respect for Toronto will come down with it.

I'm aware that city council gave the developer authorization to demolish this building way back in 2000, but is there not anything that citizens can do to voice their opinions at this point? Is the city councillor for this area in favour of preserving the building?

Does Toronto not have a Public Consultation Office or a Heritage organization? Montreal has both of these and while they do sometimes result in height reductions/project cancellations, they would also prevent this sort of disaster. As a skyscraper fan, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Toronto needs its own Dinu Bumbaru!

If there was some sort of peaceful protest organized in opposition to the demolition of this building, I would even try and make my way from Montreal to take part.

I love the character of older buildings in Toronto, but the people running the city don't seem to share that point of view...

The building cannot be saved otherwise. You have to give a little, to get a little I suppose. The office space over and above will cover the cost of rebuilding the facade and artwork in the existing tower into the new tower which will be built over and around it.

It's not going to be built over and around it dude. The Concourse Tower is going to be completely destroyed, with the walls being rebuilt using the disassembled materials. Even then, it has been mentioned by some that the facade quite possibly wont be rebuilt from the actual concourse facade.

Yeah, rebuilding the facade. The interior space is beyond salvage. Plus it's sitting on very valueable land. This is one where you can't get everything you want. Even a partial save, is a win.

Well that's different. That's a public building on public land, and government has unlimited funds to repair and renovate their offices.

The Concourse building is a private building on private land. In this case private profits from the expansion of the property can go into saving some of the details and materials of the historic facade. Like I said, not a win-win, but a win-lose.

Ok sure, then you wouldn't mind seeing the Royal York go then, right? Or hell, that commerce court art deco building is only 34 floors, surely a shiny new 70 storey generic blue tower could take its place. Gotta take that capitalistic mindset all the way to the bank!
