This morning I turned around on Signal Hill and aimed my camera down on Pleasantville again.
If you're unfamiliar, this neighbourhood of St. John's was once a large and bustling American military base. This was one of several such bases in Newfoundland and one of the primary reasons the Canadian government was interested in taking over the country. According to its own documents, they thought it was embarrassing and not ideal to have the Americans guarding the north Atlantic coast (with Canada basically only in control of the Gulf of St. Lawrence). Of course, once the Canadians took over, Pleasantville was neglected and declined - and the Canadian military still based most of its North Atlantic operations out of Halifax. The 1950s were incredible boom years in that city, much to the dismay of St. John's residents, who were horrified to see most national/federal services being relocated there.
Now, a historical wrong is being righted. The Canadians have finally gotten out of much of Pleasantville and returned the neglected hulk to Newfoundland. The city of St. John's is busily turning the area into our newest (and spectacularly well-planned) neighbourhood.
