Why the heck do they have to describe the office component as such? It's a — office building, end of sentence. Might this be in response to some outdated planning dictate?

I really don't think this could be the reason. I live in the Atlanta metro area, (population around 5 million). Atlanta itself has only about 10% this many people. The city is surrounded by lots and lots of suburbs, (far more than Edmonton) yet Atlanta is considered a pretty prominant city.

Correct. You are required to identify the primary use in a DP.

But what's the point? Does it affect parking ratios? FAR?

What if not a single financial use becomes a tenant?

Not trying to beleaguer the issue, but it just sounds like another pointless bureaucratic requirement dictated for no reason. It's stuff like that which would make me want to fill in the blank with something like "clown college", and see if the bureaucrat can recognize his alma mater.

as a school, your "clown college" would probabably have higher exiting and life safety requirements imposed on it than for traditional office or financial uses.

and yes, parking ratios and other things can be affected by the specific use or uses being proposed (i.e. parking ratios are higher for medical offices than for general offices). i'm not sure why you think that the actual - or potential - uses of the spaces involved in a permit application is "another pointless bureaucratic requirement" when it can affect everything from emergency exiting to parking (on street as well as off street) to water and utility consumption...

ps. i think you may have meant "belabour" rather than "beleaguer"...

Considering the mosquito population that I've noticed at that little lake, don't know how successful this will be.

Light sculpture by DECL Board Member Laurissa Kalinowsky

Alley of Light’s ‘IllumiNITE‘ light sculpture competition took place this past long weekend on the 4th Street Promenade, in the pocket park just east of Beaverhills House Park. More than 12 creative and illuminating sculptures were on display for steady crowds during a milder-than-usual couple of days. There were other visual displays, bannock making over strategically-placed fire pits, hot chocolate courtesy of Sobey’s Urban Fresh, and a small pop-up craft store in the Armstrong Building. Kudos to Edmonton on the Edge, the Alley of Light crew, and everyone else that helped out to put on this great event for its second consecutive year!
-----
If you missed ‘IllumiNITE‘, you still have your chance to see some of the sculptures and be part of the second annual ‘Parka Patio Party‘ at Latitude 53 Gallery this Saturday. Limited amount of tickets are still available for sale. Last year’s inaugural event was a cold but hearty Edmonton winter experience, and this is your last chance to hang on Latitude’s rooftop patio before they move locations!
-----------
Permits were applied for this week for John Day’s 29-storey Kelly Ramsey hotel/office project on Rice Howard Way. Initial renderings are promising and the design retains the facade of the burned out Kelly Ramsey Block. Rumoured start date is fall 2013.
-----
Approved 29-storey ‘Raintree’ condo project by Alan Wasnea at 106 Street and 97 Avenue also seems to be moving ahead. Permits were applied for this week for a Residential Sales Centre. If built, this will be the tallest building next to the Legislature and promises to offer some nice views of downtown and the river valley.
---------
A reminder – The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters Society, Oliver Community League, and DECL host a Bike Lane discussion this Wednesday, February 27, 7-9 pm at Oliver Hall (10326 118 St).
--------
Also next week is an Open House on the proposed Civic Precinct Master Plan at City Hall on Tuesday, February 26, 11 am-5 pm.
--------
The next edition of Oliver Community League’s ‘Board Game Night‘ is Friday, March 8 at 7:30 pm at Oliver Hall (10326 118 St). Hosting the event on a Friday will allow attendees to join in post-board games drinks at a local establishment.
--------
As mentioned last week, renovations to our new 103 Street space start this month. Final preparations are being made and we should see construction on site in the coming week if all things go according to plan!
-------

Council approved the ‘extradosed’ LRT bridge design this week for the Valley LRT Line.

------
We failed to mention last week that Transcend Coffee Jasper Avenue is closing February 28 unfortunately. The owner cited the location “did not achieve a sustainable level of profitability.” Previously ‘Axis Cafe’, it was this location’s kitchen that gave rise to their South American street food offerings, now discontinued. We’re sad to see it go and wish this local coffee company all the best in the future.
-------
LGBT-friendly Flash Nightclub is also closing at the end of the month. It is rumoured to be replaced by a new nightclub entitled ‘E Bar’.
--------
Speaking of bars, there was an interesting article last week on the ‘club-to-pub’ phenomenon, including a mention of all the new places that have opened up recently downtown including Central Social Hall and The Bower (formerly Halo Nigthclub).
--------
The City Market Downtown continues every Saturday, 10 am-3 pm at City Hall. DECL will be back at the market selling memberships and taking your questions starting soon. Stay tuned for exact dates!

Goose shit is fine.

It's more broken glass and used needles that I'd be concerned about

Other than that, awesome idea. As long as they can keep it clean & swimmable.

Looks like Council is getting an update Monday on the downtown performing arts centre.

"The current plan includes the initially proposed Performing Arts Centre, the participation of the University of Alberta to develop a downtown academic campus, and a new commercial office building, along with other potential commercial and retail space in the Downtown. Initially named the Edmonton Performing Arts Centre, the project has been renamed the Edmonton Downtown Academic and Cultural Centre. This project has the potential to be a catalyst for the continued revitalization of downtown Edmonton, and in particular, the Arts District."

ANNOUNCING LIVING LOCAL NEIGHBOURHOOD ARTS & HERITAGE GRANTS
The Edmonton Heritage Council (EHC), Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) and Edmonton
Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013
Living Local Neighbourhood Arts & Heritage project grants.

The Living Local grant program connects Edmontonians to their neighbourhoods through arts
and heritage and builds neighbourhood connections with resident artists and historians.
Allan Bolstad, executive director for EFCL said, “It is nice to see community leagues connect
with local artists and historians to do projects that recognize the history and unique character of
their neighborhood. Edmonton is jam packed with interesting places and this program helps
bring some of them to life.”

“We’re really pleased to see this program take root and to see so many interesting and rich
projects emerge,” said John Mahon, executive director of the Edmonton Arts Council. “The
Living Local grants program is an important step towards increasing awareness about artists
and heritage experts in neighbourhoods throughout Edmonton.”

The project recipients are as follows:
Houses/Home (Friends of University Hospitals)
§ Historic houses in the Garneau area will be the subject of this project, resulting in a
gallery exhibit of charcoal and chalk drawings of the houses, with narratives based on
research of the specific houses and architectural styles of Garneau area houses.
Grant: $12,190

Ribbons of History – Connecting 99th (Strathcona Center Community League)
§ A project that will add art to sixty poles along 99 St. from 92 Ave. to Whyte Ave., drawing
attention to the neighbourhood’s history along Mill Creek ravine. The use of QR codes
with the banners will connect pedestrians to the art and history of the neighborhood.
Grant: $13,000

Bellevue Heritage Project (Bellevue Community League)
§ This project will create biographies and portraitures of Bellevue’s significant founders,
who have contributed to the neighbourhood and community league.
Grant: $5,000

Living Heritage in Mill Woods (Mill Woods Presidents Council)
§ The project will document the stories of people involved in establishing Mill Woods as
well as the community’s experience around the 1979 gas fire. This project aims to
dismantle stereotypes about Mill Woods and connect artists and community history in
these neighborhoods.
Grant: $20,000

A total of 6 eligible applications were received. The total grant was allocation of $49,857.
“The Ave We Had”, one of the 2012 Living Local projects received an honourable mention from
the Governor General’s History Awards. The project was an effort of Rat Creek Press and
community leagues along Alberta Avenue. Actors, historians, journalists, photographers and
community organizers participated in the project resulting in an online digital archive and a radio
drama interpreting the work.
