Delnor named construction manager for ATB’s move to Telus House

EDMONTON - The redevelopment of one of Edmonton’s landmark downtown office towers starts in June as ATB Financial prepares for a move to Telus House.

Edmonton-based Delnor Construction announced Tuesday it has been awarded the construction-management job of gutting 11 floors in the tower to bare concrete and rebuilding them to suit the provincially owned financial institution’s new corporate offices. Delnor will also be working on other space in the building, which will house an innovation centre.

The announcement comes nearly two years after ATB said it would move its head offices from ATB Place and the adjacent Sun Life Building to Telus House, a 33-storey tower at 10020 100th Street, which is part of the Telus Plaza complex. The ATB Place lease expires in 2014.

Telus and ATB will band the building with a giant digital, high-resolution screen that will display corporate and community messages.

ATB has said it is investing $35 million to $40 million into the project while Telus is also redeveloping its offices in the tower and an adjacent green space at a cost of $20 million.

Coming in on highway 44 Rivier Que Barre, looking at downtown the Pearl is very dominant on the west side. As for that project in McMurray. I don't expect to see that as finished product. When you see the crap that is being built there. As for another project, the Slave lake library rebuild is looking good. I love the new wood finish ceiling. MIA you done good.

Going out on a limb here, but the digital billboard band around the building, I believe, can be seen at the base of the newly minted "ATB Tower" in this picture.

Edmonton non-profit groups plan for downtown artists village

EDMONTON - Edmonton could soon have its own Quartet in the Quarters, under plans for a new downtown building expected to attract numerous senior artists as residents.

Unlike the recent Maggie Smith movie about a home for retired British musicians, the 64-unit Artists Quarters is intended to provide housing where young and old can work in their fields.

But Shirley Serviss, head of one of the non-profit groups behind the development, said Tuesday she has heard the comparison.

“I had someone mention it to me last night. She thought of our project all the way through (the film). I must confess I did too,” Serviss, president of Artists Urban Village, said with a laugh.

“Other people have asked me what happens when you put a lot of artists in a building. I don’t know. We will find out.”

The 17-storey tower at 96th Street and 102A Avenue will incorporate the demolished Mount Royal Hotel site, an adjoining building and a lane and parking lot to the west.

I like how they will incorporate the little older building currently on the corner.

Exciting project to say the least.

This along with Corner 1, UCAMA, the new Hotel across the street under construction and the armature work will really begin to transform the west edge of the quarters.

You are right about the billboard. I wonder how long it will be before people complain about being distracted at that intersection by the bright LED lights...

Funny thing is that ATB won't be in that tower. They wanted their logo on one of the buildings and Telus didn't want to give theirs up (used to work for ATB when they made the decision to move to Telus).

Out of those three, I am not 100% sold on Corner 1 moving ahead anytime soon. I know they've qualified for some City funding for some affordable suites, but there has been zero marketing or anything about this project. Prove me wrong BCM.

Ot of curiosity, how do affordable suites come into play when it comes to any future assesments, or even condo fees for that matter?

Under Cornerstones I beleive the units are owned by the city. So the city would effectively act as the owner.

It's a bit odd... since for instance Edgewater, which is supposedly going to be a rental complex and is up for sale, but the city already purchased 14 units in the first building. So there must be some sort of JOA that has to go along with the sale.

I think Corner 1 will end up being rentals too. But I also have some doubts about it going ahead any time soon. That artists building looks nice but I thnk that's a ways off too.

Speaking of Edgewater. It's back at EDC next month. I thought that was all approved ?

weird. I'm very fortunate in that we have a fantastic board in my building....but the thought of the city retaining ownership of a significant number of units is not something i would ever want to be a part of.

^ I don't think I would either. I don't know who's admisinstrating the program as far as deciding who gets to move in, but if they're not doing a good job it could be unpleasant for surrounding residents. Granted absentee owers are likely just as bad. Our condo building in McKay was pretty good 6-7 years ago, when most of the residents were owners... but as they've moved on and the place has filled up with renters it has really gone downhill. If anything, a rental building like Edgewater that is properly managed likely has a lot less problems than a condo style apartment building where suites are rented out by the owners
