My only concern with EPCOR is its width as well; however, this is only because there aren't much high rise structures directly next to it, making it stick out like a sore thumb. Wait till Arena development goes up and other surrounding projects, the issue with its width will disappear in all our minds.

Everything thing else about the tower is great. The lighting on the front steps is very unique and makes a 'side' entrance that much more grand; I love it. I've taken a look inside just bottom floor and was amazed. One question though, can people smoke on those balconies?

^ No smoking on those balconies was what I heard. In fact I've never seen anyone use them.

My biggest gripe isn't with EPCOR but its vicinity - surrounded by parking lots, plus the crappy little buildings south of it and that Reuse Centre.

You can't smoke within 5M of a building entrance, so smoking on the balconies would be out of the question. I imagine the landlord would discourage smoking on the balconies as well, for a variety of reasons

I do like the balconies too. It's a unique feature in a highrise commercial building. I imagine a lot of people in the tower bring their own lunches due to the lack of amenities close by, I'd bet the balconies are popular when it's nice outside as a lot of folks probably don't leave their floor during the course of the day

having said that, there were other "inspirations" for the exterior as well - which for the record i am quite fond of - and of its articulation and detailing.

i'm okay if the entire world doesn't concur with my opinions and choices - when it comes to things ultimately determined by personal taste there's never going to be unanimity. it is too bad however when discussions embrace hostility rather than inviting exchanges of information and opinion..
I've walked some of the floors,,,OK most and some that did not have tenants yet. as office towers go I find it one of the nicer spaces in the city.

Quite nice!

I can see quite a bit of Oliver heading this route in the next 10-15 years. I can see it being quite feasible if the structure of a building is sound.

That being said, hopefully my building isn't purchased and converted to condos.

With a knock at the door, Highlands neighbourhood tries to rebuild social bonds

BY ELISE STOLTE, EDMONTON JOURNAL FEBRUARY 10, 2013

EDMONTON - If you live in Highlands, expect a knock on your door from a well-intentioned, inquisitive neighbour.

The community proposed a pilot project to rebuild the social bonds between neighbours. They’ve started going door-to-door, holding one interview at a time, asking people what they love and laying the ground work for a neighbourhood choir, walking groups and/or a mentorship program for kids.

It will be a labour of love for Howard Lawrence.

Executive committee passed the mature neighbourhood zoning amendments Monday, despite concerns from many community leagues.

Council did request additional rules to control noise. They also asked the planning department to write guidelines for its development officers to help them consider privacy and access to natural light when they make discretionary calls. The amendments go to public hearing for further debate and a full council vote March 18.

Senior housing, interesting.

It would have been much better to make the 1st storey/glazing a few extra feet, throws off the balance. The rest is very mid pack Edmonton. That area is sure getting dense.

This site was originally owned by BCM. They secured a DC2.787 a few years ago and had the site up for sale. PRISM from Calgary purchased it and are looking to develop it. The plans look somewhat different than what was originally approved. I hope to god they change the colour scheme....terrible.

Colours are simply brutal... and yes our city needs 'more colour', but tastefully... not just because.
