I don't think it makes a difference if WestJet and American ever do a joint venture. With the way US has downsized flights to YEG, they'll probably let YEG go and let WS handle the leisure traffic. US Airways has hubs in Philadelphia, Charlotte and Phoenix. American has hubs in Dallas, Miami, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. I am curious if the Phoenix hub would be swallowed up by the LA hub. They have stated that Phoenix would stay a hub but i am not sure i believe it personally. The connections LAX offers relative to PHX are quite substantial. I am surprised WS doesn't offer 2x daily flights to LAS.

A quote from the same above link: "Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: Airline officials have said they intend to maintain the airport as a hub for the airline. But one issue with a Phoenix hub has long been that it’s dominated by vacationers seeking deals rather than business travelers paying full price for tickets. Airlines usually maintain the status quo for a time after a merger, for business and public-relations sake, but big cuts can come later. US Airways cut its number of Pittsburgh flights by one-third and closed its flight-attendant and pilot bases there two years after the 2005 America West/US Airways merger."
