Just got back from Cancun and took Air Transat. Other than small seats, service was acceptable. These are cattle runs but we were fortunate this time to get there and back on schedule.

No problems running out of gas with the big A310s

Glad to hear you had a good time.

Sunwings fleet is mostly made up of 737-800's leased from other European carriers during the winter months, this also includes European flight crews in many cases (ala German pilots).

I had my first and hopefully last taste of mexicos cartel problems today aswell on the highway returning home. I came upon a scene near the entrance to the Bahia principe resort on the highway in what clearly indicated a shoot out with the police. Not a pretty scene but was told by a friend it was a group of three narcos who had fired on the police while heading south... That's my first expirence seeing that in my now 5 years in the area. Glad no one else was hurt and the problem was taken care of...

I can honestly assure you the area has very little of this sort of issue from my personal experience. But just a little reminder that it can and does happen... I can still say I feel no different here than I did in Edmonton!!! And that includes going off the beaten path in places like playa del Carmen and cancun (city) itself.

Looking a little closer at Air transats winter schedule from YEG and realized they offer flights to Panama city (Tocumen airport) and Liberia Costa Rica from YEG but not from Calgary? Interesting that the airline who is virtually absent from YEG in the summer has such a major presence during the winter. Mind you that weather does make people seek warm air and sun!

Was thinking of booking a trip with Sunwing but this news and rumor of a strike pushed me into flying with United with a stop in Houston on our way to Cancun. The flexibility of the United flights being twice a day was nice as well as the extra legroom in Business class, my 6'5 frame isn't a fan of the 29" seat pitch on Sunwing. The flights to/from Houston are very full (both seating classes), great to see this flight doing so well, hopefully their EWR flight does just as well

Hopefully we see IAH maintain 2x daily through out summer eventually. I know Winter is busy due to the increase in the Oil business, and tourism. But I don't see why they couldn't.

A lot of people use the UA flights to IAH for onward travel to CUN which is why YEG sees the increase and up gauge in equiptment during the winter months. I'm still surprised it isn't two daily year round. Calgary has the 4 dailys by UA this summer plus AC express with the CRJ-705's. My sister inlaw works for AC express and has flown the YYC-IAH flights several times and says the flights are usually not very full (maybe half) and I have used the flight before to get to Cancun using what was the still CO from YYC-IAH on a 73G and there were maybe 40 of us on the aircraft (I counted what I could). I'd have to see the numbers but I'm sure there is a increasing demand for the flight in the summer months aswell. Just have to remember that just because a airline hubs in a certain city does not mean the flights are full, it's simply the strategic plan of funneling as many as you can to fill up as many seats on your flights as possible.

I've flown AC Express to IAH from YYC a few times in the last few months and the flights are full. The 705's are very comfortable and have great entertainment. Plus checkin is alot easier than when you fly UAL. That being said I usually fly YEG-IAH on UAL and the flights are packed mainly of people in the Oil Industry. I think the late night departure grabs a lot of the holiday crowds as the connections are good.

Sounds like American and US airways are infact merging with details to be announced as soon as Monday. Should see some possible moves by the new entity that could have some good effects possibly a YEG-DFW flight to compete with United? And one world will finally arrive in Edmonton (long overdue).

Westjets announcement will add two new Canadian cities to its network and two new U.S cities aswell three seasonal flights will move to year round status.

Nope, system wide... Seems the hopes of a few of the smaller cities wanting dash 8 service will not happen. In total there will be 36 new flights/increases added to the system.

Only a few new cities seems about right for the initial batch of Q400's (when you take frequency changes on existing routes into account).

Agreed, as much as the smaller centers such as Cranbrook, lethbridge etc wanted Q400 service I don't think the demand is warranted for that many seats just yet. The Q400's will however fit into exsisting 737 routes perfectly allowing for more frequencies and freeing up a few of the 737's for the new south of the border routes and exsisting U.S cities to be linked to Canadian cities not yet linked to them. Looks like YYZ will see the most of the new additions. Also forgot to add two exsisting points will be linked nonstop in the new adjustments. Over all looks pretty good, and even a few bumps in CUN flying aswell...

I don't see YEG getting much out of this announcement this round as they (WS) will look to strengthen their hubs. What we might see and correct me if you disagree is more mainline routes from YEG as WS is adding 5 new 737's this year. Maybe we will see ORD? I predict that if anything it means more frequency in to yeg on existing routes this summer. It's nice finally talking about mainline and regional routes with WS now. Looking forward to talking transatlantic in 6-10 years.

SEA is sure to be on the list of new cities, likely to YYC. with maybe an extension to YVR (meaning the aircraft would do YYC-SEA-YVR-SEA-YYC). Along the same thread the other new US city could be PDX.

New Canadian cities?? I will go out on a limb and say its YBR and YQL.

Alternately WS could also announce a new mainline city to be serviced by aircraft freed up by the Q400.

Not sure if having a seat sale translates to increased service.

However, Air Canada appears to have added a second daily flight YEG-YZF (both DH4) for the summer scheds.

With the shuffling around of the Dashes... it looks like AC and YEG will have a net gain of 3 weekly flights compared to prior summer scheds.

YXE and YQR both gaining 5 per week, YZF up 7, but YYC down 8 and YWG down 6. But capacity will be up on YQR, YXE due to frequency, YZF due to frequency and upguaging, and YYC, YMM and YQU due to the DH4 mix.
