I cannot criticize Air Canada for putting their best foot forward and claiming they are "boosting Western Canada capacity" with these changes.

However, if we add up the capacity gains and losses we see the actual capacity "boost" is quite modest, perhaps by a couple of per cent over last year. All that is happening is that Air Canada Express (JAZZ) is replacing a number of smaller aircraft with a smaller number of larger aircraft. This is good for them because it lowers their unit costs. Not much difference for the customer though.

Whoever duplicated this chart has reversed some of the entries in the 2012 and 2013 columns (eg YYC-YQU,YYJ and YEG).

The original one posted by AC is correct though.

Keep your eyes out for these guys in the next few months...

Aero Bee. They have already taken delivery of 737-800 and have a second coming shortly. Plan is to operate 10 737-800's by winter 2013/14. Application has been made and granted to operate from any Canadian city to destinations in Mexico, the U.S and the Caribbean. The company is founded by former sky service personnel. And will also be launching a new tour company to support the airline. Amongst the list of known destinations I have personal knowledge of the carrier serving are Cancun and Cozumel as the intent has already been made. I assume it will simply replace the defunct skyservice. Likely will become a regular sight at most major Canadian airports at the time of the official launch.

Very interesting, with a name like "Aero Bee" I'm having livery memories of the bee at the front of the Zip 732's!

This is a Canadian outfit right? Any idea where that first 738 is right now?

Hmm, doing some searching it looks like that first 738 has been sitting around since August 2012 with a Canadian reg: C-GBKI. Looks like it has done a quick circuit at YYZ on January 11th:

Sunwing's terrible. I hopped a charter flight to Mazatlan last year, the planes are old & worn out, it was full of rig pigs heading for an all inclusive drink-fest, on the way back the plane blew a tire landing at Mazatlan airport, and apparently nobody thought to keep a spare tire at the airport (DUH!) and we had to wait for another plane to get flown in from Toronto to take us home. The plane they brought for us had not been cleaned from the last flight so it was filthy and the whole thing smelt like poop. A wonderful experience all around.

From what I have understood they are currently training crews in preparation for operations that won't start until the tour company is announced.

If your traveling with SunWing beware as they are also on the verge of a possible strike... In that situation it could also be very bad for the airlines long term outlook...

I had the unfortunate experience of being on a Westjet flight from Edmonton to Vancouver a short while back, and I was reminded why I detest Westjet so much. Like your flight, it was packed with a gaggle of rig pigs that were beyond spectacularly offensive for the entire flight. The flight had problems pushing back from the gate because they couldn't get the fcukers to sit down.

The Sunwing rep sounds pretty unprofessional in the Global link and he seems to change the reasoning for the delays depending on which media outlet he speaks to. Why fly Sunwing or Air Transat when you can fly WestJet. I don't find the prices to be any different for the most part unless you are specifically looking for a hotel that's sold out through WestJet vacations. For the most part, you will have less issues with WestJet as they have an adequate amount of aircraft and crews available should something go wrong.

Unfortunately no flight from YEG to CUN is scheduled service and the rules that govern charter flights are different than those from scheduled flights. Another reason why i would never fly to LGW on any Air Transat (or whichever airline they choose to use) flight. Gotta love those travel vouchers airlines give out as well.

So what is the official word? Was it stronger than anticipated headwinds that did force the landing in YYC?

Back in 2002 I went to Cancun with Air Canada, on the flight back they informed us that due to winds they would be making a landing in Denver for fuel. However they knew this before we even pushed back from Cancun, so it was no big deal.

If this was indeed a perfect storm of stronger than anticipated winds, and the flight crew timing out there is really nothing much more that could have been done (on the flying side of things). I guess the real breakdown is what happened on the ground in Calgary.

PS: Can YYC count those passengers in our numbers?
