The only retail store I'm waiting to close is Sears. That would open up huge opportunities for downtown and the Cornwall!

I have spoken of my hatred for those Boardwalk townhouses before, but this photo Stormer posted some time ago makes me hate them even more. We need someone to buy that land off of them.

Not with a proper replacement. Sears is pretty pathetic at the moment. They appear to be cutting jobs, maybe it's not that far off.

I exaggerate, of course. But there are no proper replacements short of Nordstrom or H&M, and by the time they could even find Regina on a map I fear Cornwall would be too far gone. The mall is a success right now, but I guarantee that would not have been the case had the Bay not been around to take over the Eaton's space.

Oh, and not directed at you, Devon, but can we show a little more maturity than to openly root for Sears' demise on a day when 80 Reginans were given pink slips by the company?

There are hundreds of retail jobs available in Regina at any given time. Those people will have no problems finding new jobs. As for Sears, they have done very little to reinvent themselves. The Department store scene in Canada has changed dramatically in the last 10 years. The Bay has been working very hard to re-brand itself and attract new customers. If and when Sears closes, they'll have nobody to blame but themselves.

The number of stores in the Cornwall has actually shrunk because new national chains are demanding more space and have been expanding into empty bays when they come available. Do I think one anchor will come in and take over all of Sear's leased space? Not in a million years! However, it provides huge opportunities and a blank slate for the Cornwall to bring in some of the stores you've all been talking about. I assure you H&M would be a much larger draw than Sears could ever be.

Oh my mistake, according to Saskjobs, there is over a 1000 sales and service jobs currently open in Regina, not hundreds.

No offense taken, Birthgob. It is a shame that it happened. These are mostly jobs within the distribution centre, so contrary to Regina Boi's belief that they will find retail jobs, it might be a bit more difficult to find a job on par.

I wonder if Holt Renfrew would ever come to Saskatchewan?

At this rate Regina will never start planning for LRT (favored by moi), let alone BRT.

I had a friend who worked in distribution at Sears last year. He only made a dollar above minimum wage. He ended up moving to the Global Transportation Hub. Also there are currently 160 jobs in Manufacturing & Processing open and 1000 in transport, trades, and construction. Plenty of jobs in Regina for everyone!

At this point, Lululemon and possibly Le Chateau are bigger anchors than Sears. And certainly during the day it's the food court that brings a bunch of office workers in (some I'm sure browse around here and there, I know I do). No to downplay the importance of having some good anchor tenants, but I think we are also over exaggerating them a bit as well. Cornwall will survive as it has some store options that don't exist anywhere else in the city and it's a quick stop for downtown workers, which are only growing in number.

As long as the Cornwall continues to attract and can retain its unique brand stores, it'll be fine.

Definitely wouldn't be a good thing for the city is sears closed though. They've got a big distribution building off ring road by Ross, a home retail store on quance, the Cornwall store, the outlet store, plus the sears catalogue/distribution centre just a block or two away from the outlet store. We are probably one of the more concentrated sears cities in Canada (especially on a per capita basis).

They are planning something called "second call" or something like that I think where they would open stores that are a step below their ultra luxury lines in smaller centres. I don't known if Regina would be in their plans for that or if they are more thinking of 500k+ locations.

The Bay needs some serious renovations if they want to be thought of as a high end department store here again though. The carpets are stained, there are cracked floor tiles, blackened ceiling tiles, pathetic displays with very poor paint jobs, security sensors that are falling apart, jewellery and perfume displays from the 80s... Basically a new Walmart looks nicer on the interior.

That always irked me. If they ever did decide to close one, I would hope they instead would relocate one of them to the northwest. We have a few choices out here, but nothing like FS or BB.

I would barely even consider the Bay or Sears to be anchors to the Cornwall. Technically they are, but going into those places is depressingly abandoned. I'm rooting for The Bay to stay open for years to come, but sears can go anytime...

An H&M would be pretty awesome for the Cornwall, or on the Scarth street mall as the prices for clothes there are fairly well priced and trendy. Hopefully a HR2 can open up in Sears place one day...

Would it be possible for the Cornwall to get a third floor? or is that basically impossible?

That also makes Findlater easier to understand the name. You would driving on the major highways have to "Find it Later" now we have 11 through it rather than Dilke.

OK I'm going to try to give this sears thing a go.

I work with 2 people who used to work at sears. The one guy worked at all 4 warehouse locations. He worked at the 855 Parks St warehouse, 1110 Pettigrew Ave warehouse, Sear Bargain Center and the 1050 Broad St warehouse for 15 years so I trust what he has to say. The other one worked in the 1050 broad St warehouse as well as the call center/catalog department. From what they have told me is, the people that got laid off where from the 855 Park St location. The reason for this is because Sears wants to desperately get rid of that location. The reason why is the following, old 1970's automated sorting/shelving system. They apparently did not build this building correctly. It is plagued with problems. The conveyor belts jam constantly and it is very dangerous to work in that 8 story portion. They use a counter-wait system that has to be fixed regulatory. Very little lighting. The shelving system is actually the building it self. The building cannot be used for anything else. Also from the very beginning, it was determined the building was to small. They recently moved most of the inventory from 855 Park St warehouse and the old 1110 Pettigrew Ave warehouse to the 1050 Broad St Warehouse and Sears bargain Center down the street. They closed the Pettigrew Ave warehouse 4 or 5 years ago. Currently the 855 Park St warehouse is only being used to park the SLH-trailers/trucks. SLH that's (Sear Light Hauling). They even got rid of the SLH fleet maintenance from there. As result of this they have had a 2 year backlog of inventory sitting in trailer's at Calgary's massive distribution center that they could not sell. That's why the Sears Bargain Center has all those broken appliances now. Also apparently the 1050 Broads St location is plagued with problems to, if you look at the tower portion. You can see that the back half is an addition. That's where there is a conveyor belts system and a giant 8 story slide. Both jam up regularly. So what does all of this have to do with the Downtown 1720 Hamilton Store, NOTHING. Those stores as well as the rest of the Regina locations are doing well. I work for a company that handles some of their packages. I can't say to much as I signed a DND from my employer. But what I can tell you is that they are selling plenty to stay in business. If I where to take a guess, they maybe want to eventually have a central distribution hub in Saskatchewan like they do in Calgary. Get rid of the 2 remaining warehouses. An idea that both me and the 2 people I work with think is a good idea. Turn the 1050 Broad St warehouse into condos and demo the 3 block 3 story warehouse on the back and turn it back into light 1 story industrial warehouses.

There, hopeful you can understand that. I will make no apologies for grammar/spelling.

Side note. I worked for the company that supplied the 1050 Broad St warehouse call center their phone equipment. Small world after all.

Edit. There was a decrease in there retail last year but the online sales are going strong.

Sears would be a perfect fit to move their operations to the GTH.
