Someone posted in the General Development thread about Edmontons new arena /redevelopment being approved, it would be great to see one in that thread about Reginas now that it's officially been approved. If i knew more about posting pics and links I would.

This is pretty minor construction news, but the Fireside Bistro is converting their outdoor patio into a raised deck. Looks like it's going to be a nice place to hang out once the weather warms up.

Thanks for the pic. The steel is going up fast, it looks like the main floor was mostly done today.

The modules are scheduled to go in starting on February 8. I believe that process takes 6 days but I'm not certain.

I'm not from Regina, but after reading the stadium approval article online at the Leaderpost's website I decided to read the comments below. I must say, a lot of people will post their opposition on a facebook based comments system, but I sincerely doubt they'll do anything more than that. Want your complaint to be heard? Step up and present it. Don't post it on facebook and walk away.

Good on you for getting the ball rolling, Regina. God knows that put-putting around with these things has been the "Saskatchewan way" for so long.

Yup, and progress has been halted in this province for so long. Saskatoon (my current home) has a AAA Credit rating that just shows how much fiscal responsibility we have. People see a BIG upfront number and go "WOW we can't have this, we have schools and hospitals to build" Well we have a Children's Hospital in design, a lot of large schools and renovations to these schools. New hospitals in Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Humboldt. New highway infrastructure in Saskatoon and Regina.

These projects are all being done at the same time as the stadium is going ahead. As far as I am concerned the Sask Party has done VERY well at managing funds to keep Saskatchewan in an advancing stage instead of a "sit-and-wait" attitude the NDP seemed to be playing for so long.

Let the people who make decisions make decisions. If you don't like it vote for others, run yourself, or move. Voice your opinion, yes, that is how things happen, but when your voice has been heard and a majority of people are still in favor of a different route, move aside and let it happen. This isn't a civil rights issue or putting undue pressure on others to live their lives. This is strictly a development issue that some don't like but the majority appear to like.

Get it built and move Saskatchewan forward into the 21st Century!

Dumb question. Why does highway 1 connect to the southern half of Regina. The trans-Canada was built in the 50's right. I have an old map that has the southern bypass (south ring road) but no north ring road. These where not built at the same time. Why does the Trans-Canada not connect to Victoria St on west side of Pasqua st. The train bridge on Levan was built in the 80's (not sure) cutting off Victoria St from the west.

Before the transcanada was built in 1957, the highway came to Victoria Ave on the West. It was moved south to allow for the future bypass.

Provincial Highway 4, the precursor of the Trans–Canada Saskatchewan Highway 1 followed the surveyed grade of the transcontinental CPR between the Alberta and Manitoba border. Travel along Provincial Highway 4 before the 1940s would have been travelling on the square following the township road allowances, barbed wire fencing and rail lines. As the surveyed township roads were the easiest to travel, the first highway was designed on 90 degree right angle corners as the distance traversed the prairie along range roads and township roads.[ Wikipedia

I'm pretty sure Victoria always ended at Pasqua, even before Lewvan was built. (Side note: anyone remember the original signs that said Lewvan Expressway?) Vic would have been cut off by the angle of the CPR. 13th Ave bends to follow the angle of the rail line.

I stand corrected. So where did the West highway come in? It must have been Dewdney.

Someone (an older gentleman) once told me that Highway 46 that runs out from McDonald St. and passing by the current site for the landfill and the town of Pilot Butte was the road to travel to enter/leave the east side of the city before the Trans Canada was established aligning with Victoria Avenue East. Is there any truth to that?

I spent a fair bit of time at the General hospital over the Christmas holidays visiting my pa and I plead with the authorities to build a parkade. The parking lot is overflowing and trying to find parking off site on the residential streets is akin to winning the lottery. I feel for the residents in and around the hospital who rarely get to park in front of their homes.

I used to live on Halifax St. just south of the hospital. Our house didn't have alley access or a driveway out front so we had no choice but to park on the street. Being a bus route as well, parking was permitted on only one side of the street, limiting the the number of spots on the block.

We didn't mind people parking on our street that had to visit the hospital. What really bugged us was the hospital workers parking on our block (which was a 2hr parking zone) for 12 - 24hrs at a time. We had to pay for a parking permit to pay for the privilege of being able to park on our street. The city rarely enforces those parking zones, they could make a fortune if they enforced it daily.

We could have put in a driveway but the quotes we got were insane. $16-20k for a single car driveway, plus the city charging I think around 3-4k to modify the sidewalk. That wouldn't have necessarily helped either as our neighbours had a driveway and would regularly get blocked by people parking right in front of their driveway. Seriously, what jerks thinks it's ok to park and block someone's driveway

It was one of the main reasons after 5 years of living there that we sold and moved into a new townhouse with an attached garage. The location and neighborhood was really great, but sacrificing a 6 block walk to my office for a 15 min. bike was well worth our sanity.

Sorry for the rant, but that hospital really needs a parkade. Patients forced to walk blocks to the hospital because there is no parking is pretty unacceptable.

I didn't realize hospital workers had to park on residential streets. I figured all those vehicles were mostly visitors. Even 1 level above grade for staff parking would take alot of vehicles off the residential streets. I can see why you moved.

I realize parkades are expensive but I can't believe parking rates don't cover the cost. It's a hospital for crying out loud. Who would have to pay for it? The city, province or RQHR which is the province I guess.

I believe there is a shortfall of 600 parking stalls in relation to the number of staff that the RGH has and the current staff parking capacity. I think ultimately the Regina Qu'Appelle Heath Region is responsible for the parking and construction of a parkade.

When I went to the U of R we paid high parking fees and half the student parking lots were gravel. In my opinion parking fees are just lumped into the general revenue stream. I could be wrong as I have never seen or bothered to look at financial statements or policies of said institutions.

Best Buy closing 15 Canadian stores, cutting 800 workers ...
...The shutting of eight Future Shop and seven Best Buy stores across the country comes as electronics retailers generally feel the squeeze of the burgeoning business at online retailers such as Amazon.com Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and their cut-rate prices...
...But Christopher Bennett, a spokesman for Best Buy Canada, said the cutbacks are not the result of heated e-commerce competition, but rather consumers’ growing preference for smaller stores. The new, smaller Future Shop stores will be roughly one-quarter the size of its big-box outlets.
“This is the first phase of a larger transformational strategy,” Mr. Bennett said. “There’s going to be much larger multichannel component” which includes online and mobile shopping....

The reason I am posting this story is because I wonder what the chances are that BestBuy/FutureShop would open one of these "smaller stores" in downtown Regina like they have in bigger cities like Vancouver?

I wonder what the chances are that a best buy / future shop in Regina will be cut. Both in the same end of the city seems ..... redundant.
