By the way what type of lens is that, telephoto? I worked in Burnaby for 8 months and they mountains never looked that close!
Did you even take the time to notice? Most people don't. I can't for the life of me understand how so many people don't think the mountains are as close to the city(s) as they really are. They are within the borders of the Greater Vancouver Regional District.[/QUOTE]

Yes I did thank you. And no this is a photographic effect, the mountains aren't that close, or at least they don't seem so when seen through human eyes.

Just like this photo, in real life when you're on the look out, the mountains loom a lot smaller, that is, on a day when you can see them.

Why the uptight defence, that's not a dis, yo.

^ ^ I'm sure you're right considering that the photo wasn't even taken in Burnaby, but rather from the western tip of Richmond looking northeast across the airport and Burnaby. This building is shown in the foreground of the photo, and the mountains definitely don't look that close and dramatic from there. And not just because of the haze either.

This is almost the same spot from where the picture was taken.

Although I'd be careful about letting it drop like that if you were there in person; it might freeze open.

That picture says it all. I have the heat cranked on to maximum in every single room of this house, and I'm still freezing!

Here's an interesting series Mtlskyline posted in the Montreal photo thread

SO COOL! They look like Siberia!

We've never had temperatures that cold in St. John's. Our coldest in recorded history is a nighttime low of -23C.

I'd LOVE to see how pretty we'd look freezing to death.

The CN tower dwarfs everything else in that shot.
Hopefully Oxford place, Projectcore & One Yonge fix this.

I love how the CN has a sort of monolithic character about it. To me it should be viewed more as a monument than as just an element in the skyline.

What does stand out to me however, is that north of Shanghi-la, the height and bulk drops off drastically. Aura will help but there will still be a big gap there.

^ Massey tower should help to fill in that gap a bit.

Oh, even worse than that: my parents spent a few years after they retired teaching on a northern Manitoba reserve (at the same time that I was living in Winnipeg). So I went up there twice.

-45C was the coldest I ever experienced. It was INSANE. We boiled water, threw cups of it into the air, and it came down as a foggy/snowy puffy cloud. It even made a 🞵🞵🞵🞵 sound (apologies, if you're British).

Actually in the city, I think the low -30sC was the coldest I ever experienced. But it felt like the whole winter was -10C to -25C, which was torture. I even got a ticket for making an illegal left turn and I honestly couldn't even see the sign prohibiting it because of the exhaust fog.

I contested it in court - and lost - and the judge (I assume it's a judge) was just a b****. Oh my God, I've never seen someone in a professional setting take such obvious delight in being an a**hole.

She interrupted my story a half dozen times, laughed at me, rolled her eyes when her little assistant confirmed I had a clean driving record. At the end, she was red-faced and almost shouting when she gave a speech about how I was clearly in the wrong.

And then she said I had to pay the $X,

But what she said was $100 less than the original ticket.

It made me SO happy. I phoned my parents once I was outside the court, posted it to FB, the whole works, ha!

Love that picture of Toronto. It was awesome yesterday morning coming in on the Lakeshore West GO train and seeing the lake have the layer of fog on it. And the way there were wisps of it going up as opposed to just a flat blanket it made the lake actually look furry.
