A blow for Portage Place?

Portage Place IMAX to close

The biggest movie screen in town is going dark for good.

The Portage Place IMAX theatre will close as of March 31, says Clare McKay, the vice-president of Forks North Portage, the non-profit partnership that runs the cinema.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. The Free Press commentariat are just as bad as the YouTube commentariat.

Before we know it, Regina and Saskatoon will surpass us in major developments.

since the project is no long in the works, i think your free to discuss details on what the project was, where it was going to be built, and how it was going to look.

this news totally 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 tho man was there even a realistic shot of this thing being built, or was it just a pie in the sky type deal.

It was state of the art in 1987, I went to many shows back then, but they never upgraded it really, it was bound to happen, heck they were running movies that any other theater ran, not the awsome docus they used to. It was a old IMAX, and IMAX is not gone in this city, we have one at Polo Park btw. It is staying.

I am sure since the old IMAX is set up for a great style convention type setting someone will reno it and it will be like the Met. It is in a great location being right downtown with underground parking.

just remember when Famous players pulled out of Portage Place, we all thought it was the end of the world, now Empire has them and are doing well.

The city is changing in the quadrant, you have to expect this. One out, something new in. And I highly doubt IMAX will run away for good and just leave us with the Polo one. Seeing that we nailed an Ikea, I can see IMAX doing one of their 3d Imax buildings out in one of these area's.

IMAX is a technology, not a theatre operator. Forks North Portage operated the Portage Place IMAX theatre.

IMAX itself does not run or own any theatres, so it would be up to Cineplex or Landmark to add more IMAX screens in Winnipeg.

Portage Place IMAX showed (shows) their documentaries multiple times a day, with one hollywood film in the evening, and sometimes in the afternoon. The quality was still as good or better than the other theatres. I watched Skyfall there on Thursday and it was great.

As mentioned elsewhere, one of the reasons they were having trouble is because that one hollywood film they show is rarely new, it's 3 months old because they can't get the first run movies (not sure why).

Also, the Globe Theatre in Portage Place is a Landmark theatre, not Empire.

Yeah the article doesn't explain why they could only show the movies months after intial release. Certainly it doesn't have to do with IMAX licencing since the Polo Park one shows it first run as does the big screen one in downtown Montreal.

I'm really interested in the answer to that. Is it just because they're too expensive? Or does Cineplex somehow have first rights or something?
