SLC torchlight parade

Kind of off the subject, but I am a huge fan of community building and events. I just experienced Edinburgh, Scotland for New Years and it was a tremendous experience. My wife and I and our two friends especially loved the Torchlight Procession. I think somewhere around 30k people had torches, and all the money went to charity. Which I love.

Not that I want SLC to copy this event.... ok, I do. But Salt Lake should do something spectacular like this, or similar. It would have people from all over the country traveling to SLC just for the experience to see what a fun city it is.

How was SLC's New Years? I heard there was 3 days of events?

So these are the most recent submittals for multi-family residential development in SLC:

The Granary Place Apartments- NE corner of 700 South 300 West, 148 units and 5 stories tall.

ParkField Apartments - 1380 S. West Temple 5 stories tall. First level parking with 4 levels of apartments above. Not sure on number of units.

Newhouse Apartments - mid-block on 500 South directly south of Smiths Marketplace. They will be demolishing the existing office structure. 5 stories and 61 units.

Brunswick Place Apartments - 245 S. 200 E. 132 units, 2 levels of parking and 6 levels of apartments.

I may have missed some smaller projects but these were the largest recent submittals.

umm..."technically"?? There is a big hill similar to the 'point of the mountain' separating Utah Valley and Salt Lake Valley, that exists between Salt Lake City and everything north of it. So, I don't know where you get your information. But, there is definitely a geographic boundary between Salt Lake City and north Salt Lake/Bountiful area and therefore, Ogden area, too.

Thanks! I guess I heard wrong. I thought the long range plans were to have a light rail go down University Avenue but it looks like it's only a bus route. Bummer.

bike share

I hope our new bike program expands quickly. I wonder if the city plans on expanding the bike lanes as well?

Let me ask you a question then... If Bountiful, Layton, Ogden, Brigham City are not in the Great Salt Lake Valley, then what valley(s) are they in?

There is a very significant difference between the Utah Valley and the Great Salt Lake Valley by means of the two (Wasatch & Oquirrh) mountain points meeting at the Jordan Narrows. The "point" you referred to is not part of a geographical boundary that divides two separate valleys.

Just because there's a point doesn't mean that they're not part of the same very large valley. If the Great Salt Lake Valley contains even part of the Great Salt Lake, then Ogden-Clearfield is also in the Great Salt Lake Valley.

The next time you are most anywhere in the west part of Salt Lake County (on a clear day)—look north and you will see the valley floor at the base of Ben Lomond near North Ogden, the same applies for the base of Mount Ogden, Francis Peak, etc. You will see that it's really all the same valley. You can't see the base of Mount Timpanogos or Mount Nebo from anywhere on the valley floor in Salt Lake County.

I understand what you're saying. But, if we were to go off of what you are saying, we might as well include the Tooele area, all of Davis and Weber County, and heck, why not the Salt Flats? and everything that is not blocked off completely from mountains and such? Because if you had a telescope you should see Wendover from Salt Lake City because it is not interrupted by Mountains. It just does not make any sense.

The Salt Lake Valley just does not include Davis, Weber, or Tooele counties. It only includes Salt Lake County. It includes Salt Lake City, Magna, West Valley City, South Salt Lake, Murray, Sandy, Draper, Kearns, West Jordan, South Jordan, Herriman, and all those other unincorporated areas such as Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Taylorsville, Bennion, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Lake_Valley

I can see Mount Nebo from the North end of the Salt Lake Valley. I can also see Timp from the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. By your logic, this means Utah Valley is really just part of the Salt Lake Valley as well.

But can you see the valley floor of those mountains? The peaks are not in the valley, they are a border to the valley. If you can see homes (Traverse Ridge excluded) in those valleys, then I surrender the point to you.

You are right. Tooele, much of Box Elder County, the salt flats, etc. are all part of the same Great Salt Lake Valley that Salt Lake County is also in. Many only see it as what you described as Salt Lake County. That is only a small subsection of the entire valley. Most feel that everything between the Oquirrhs and the Wasatch is the boundary and nothing else is.

BTW: My apologies to everyone for getting this forum somewhat off track. It was unintentional. Peace!

As far as commercials with Utah, I saw a cool one on new years eve. There was a really awesome Google commercial that was essentially a time lapse of events over the last year. You can see an extended version here (the original was about 30 seconds, but it an awesome commercial so check out the whole thing):

• Video Link

If you go to 2:27 it has a second clip from the color fest at the hari krishna temple in Spanish Fork. This clip was also on the actual 30 second commercial. It was cool to be watching the year in review and see something that has become such a fun tradition in my own life here in Utah.
At ~2:24 you can also see an aerial shot of ThePianoGuys doing their "What Makes You Beautiful" song.

I've never heard of the Great Salt Lake Valley outside its historical usage when discussing the old name of the region (when Salt Lake was considered Great Salt Lake City).

So, I'm inclined to say there is no 'Great Salt Lake Valley'. There is a 'Salt Lake Valley' - but that's about it. And that pretty much only includes Salt Lake County.

I don't know. Just really haven't heard the term 'Great Salt Lake Valley' before.

You also see Kermit the Frog about the same point.

Um...good development is good.

UTPlanner, thanks for the information about those five submissions for apartment/condo complexes...all of which will be taller and more dense than what they're replacing. If I were looking at moving back downtown soon, that development just south of Smiths Marketplace would be pretty ideal--close to TRAX, 400 South, Trader Joe's, Trolley Square, blah blah blah...

tygr, is sounds to me like you're confusing the Great Basin with the Salt Lake Valley. Lake Bonneville covered much of the state, but the Utah Valley and the Salt Lake Valley are like textbook examples of what makes a valley in the first place, regardless of if they were created or shaped by the same body of water. They are surrounded on all sides by mountains.

I am willing to let this conversation die, but I would like to offer one more feedback based on scottharding's reply.

I have no confusion about the Great Basin. That is defined by the area between the Wasatch (and ranges south to basically Cedar City) and the Sierra Nevada ranges—basically the entire western half of Utah and 80+% of Nevada.

The Salt Lake Valley that everyone is defending is not surrounded by mountains "on all sides." Where are the mountains from the northern point of the Oquirrhs to the point that Orlando referred to that is the division between Salt Lake and Davis counties? It seems that the Salt Lake Valley everyone is referring to is only 3/4 surrounded.

Again, I didn't intend for this to get us off topic. My apologies.

Anyway...

The other night I had a dream I was at a party on the east side (the view overlooked downtown from an area that was probably between the University of Utah and the H Rock on the east mountains) and I noticed a new tower downtown situated right dab in the middle of the skyline. It was a bit over 800 feet tall since the Wells Fargo Center was about half its size, and I remember commenting to a man how awkward the skyline looked now - but he disagreed.

That's it. Well, that's the only thing about the dream I thought you'd all be interested in, as the rest of the dream was pretty weird - which is par for the course for me.

Not saying it was a vision or anything (no, I don't believe in those things) ... just an interesting dream.

So, yeah...

Eh, I wouldn't worry about being off-topic, since there isn't really any other topic going on right now.

So yeah, there are gaps in the valley walls. But by that argument, we can go ahead and include Boise and Reno in the Salt Lake Valley.
