Yeah that's ridiculous. It's mass transit, not a scenic tourist train through the Rockies.

Leaving a median for 'future rapid transit' doesn't always pan out.
They left a generous median along Guildford Ave. in Coquitlam back in the day for one of the earlier envisioned skytrain extensions to Coquitlam. When they revisited the median route, the residents of the area screamed and cried about noise and crime effects and did not the line going through their neighbourhood. Now the median has mostly been used to build bike lanes. I guess its always good have the space for future expansion in general, but sometimes land constraints (existing buildings) make that impossible (as in the case of Clarke Road).

To prevent further moderator actions, can a Canada Line discussion thread be opened or the old one resurrected (I don't get why it was closed, people still discuss the line).

With regards to the Evergreen Line, does anyone know if Translink owns any property along the line?

There is a general Transit thread.

They own the parking lots at Port Moody and Coquitlam stations.
I can imagine the Coquitlam station land is very valueable.

I don't see why my post had to be deleted. It was a bit of a joke, Everline vs. Evergreen Line. They shortened the name, they shortened the platforms, they shortened the train consists. Everline... Took me awhile to fully compose that.

translink or the bc government have bought a lot of properties in burquitlam to prevent any conflict like cambie. Many of the strip malls are ghost town now

the burquitlam plaza has been a ghost town for a few years now - that shoppers took a big hit when the new ones opened recently - one on north road and one on como lake

it will all come back to life once the line is up and they redevelop which is the in the plans, already the density around the plaza has shot up with 100's of new condos/townhouses going up and they will need shops to walk to

Looks like additional work taking place soon, just noticed the following in a rfp.

Quote:
The Project consists of the partial demolition of two restaurants at the southwest corner of the Burquitlam Plaza and the construction of a small retail unit. There will be minimal grading and landscaping. The demolition of these two units is necessary to make way for the construction of the Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project.

According to my sources, the contract for the Evergreen Line has been signed. As for buying out business's or people that may be harmed, I do not think that has been the case and the significantly impacted will be heard from when the real construction begins.

There aren't really a lot of businesses that are going to be affected by this in the same fashion as the Canada Line, since there is no cut and cover. I do imagine, however, that there will be significant noise complaints at the tunnel portals, especially the south one.

The only properties that were purchased, AFAIK, are the ones along Murray Street and Clark Road (for the tunnel portal, plus the Dairy Queen is in the way of where the station will go.)

Originally, the plan was to route SkyTrain (the then PMC Line) elevated through the adjacent Miller Park ravine, but there was a huge outcry, so the plan was changed to a tunnel.

yeah, the tunnel was to appease the complainers

i worked with a woman who lived above the potential area of the tunnel and she wasn't pleased with that either

The second appeasement was to move the tunnel portal from above Barnet Highway (crossing Barnet elevated with sweeping views) to below Barnet Highway.

To be fair I wouldent be thrilled with a tunnel portal being built next to my house either.

Wish they had a better system of compensating owners who are negatively impacted. For some people who are negatively impacted I would say they should offer two options.
1) market value for their home (open to arbitration) + payment to cover moving expenses. After translink gains possession they can sell it off to someone else.
2) the owner can stay and refuse the offer, and accept the inconvenience.
*maybe some deals with local developers to option out some units so that residents who choose to move can get priority on new homes/units in the same area.

Make it nice and simple and give a bit of a push/incentive for people who want to complain to simply move and allow their home to go to someone else who is ok with the situation.

Yeah, this one as well as the proposed fly-over for the LRT edition which was, at one point, proposed to run right through the Clarke/Barnet/St Johns itnersection AT GRADE, because Port Moody City Council, lead by No-go-Joe Trasolini didn't want ANY elevated structures in their quaint little seaside village (y'know, they'd be too big-city and conflict with the multiple 30-storey condo towers).

she lived nowhere near the tunnel portal she was probably halfway between the two portals, I just think she was unhappy skytrain would be in her area

but i agree i feel sorry for people stuck next to the portals, especially those whose backyards back onto it

Hydro duct installation supposed to be happening on Pinetree Way in Coquitlam starting Jan 7th.

North Road looks pretty much done as far as widening is concerned.
