Developments to Improve St. John's Waterfront

St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe says the city is taking the appropriate steps to enhance the downtown waterfront. O'Keefe says St. John's has a beautiful harbour that is full of history and heritage, and it will only get better once developments are made to humanize the area. O'Keefe cites the construction of new restaurants next to The Keg as an example of improving the harbour.

In the New Year, O'Keefe says, great strides will be made to reach the city's goal. He would only say that a new development based around the parking garage will go along way towards beautifying the waterfront and Water Street. He says the project is pending and an announcement will come in early 2013.

EDIT: Literally doing a happy dance. So happy!

Even if the announcement is, "We're just going to extend the existing curtain wall of Atlantic Place over the parkade.", I am still going to be overjoyed.

The fact he mentioned beautification puts me at ease. I don't mind modern, but it has to look good. Not cheap, could-be-anywhere-in-rural-Ontario modern.

If I remember correctly, we know nothing - it's just that someone previously hinted weeks ago that there could be a proposal coming regarding the parkade.

ok im confused!? omggggg how is it going to affect water street? the parking garage isnt on water street? this is about atlantic place right?

is this going to include something to do with atlantic place itself!? ... ok im too excited right now

Maybe it's a massive development that will preserve the Water Street fascades?

And a great way to start our new year. And a great time for us to get our own section, etc, etc, etc. I am thrilled. I can't wait to see the proposal.

The way the article is written, it may not impact Water Street, this specific proposal, but may be one part in council's overall plan to beautify downtown, a plan that includes the waterfront and Water Street.

Could take it either way as written.

Great news to wake up to! (yes, I really just did get up a little while ago!) We have yet another project to look forward to! The way I take it, it seems that whatever is planned with the garage is just a way to kickstart this whole waaterfront re-development thing. Don't get me wrong, re-cladding the garage/AP would be amazing! It's something we've wanted to see since the day it was put there, but my idea of humanizing and improving the waterfront would be adding more greenspace and making harbour drive much more pedestrian friendly. (restuarants, cafe's, retail booths) I know that would be difficult with the amount of space that we have, but it's time we start thinking outside the box!

It's a very convienent time for Doc to be announcing major beautification projects and revitalization of downtown, don't you think

In all honestly I can not see the Garage going, that will be a net loss of premium parking space, eventhough "some" here thing it's ugly, it serves a much needed service to those poor souls who have to work dt.
