New Town Hall for CBS

The Town of CBS has experienced growing pains in the past few years. With that has come an increase in town staff and services. CBS Mayor Woody French says one of the reasons for the new town hall is to pull all the various departments together in the one location.

French also is also enthusiastic about the new Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre, a co-operative effort that involves not only CBS but also the River's Historical Society and the Rotary Club.

Paradise Arena Coming Soon

The Town of Paradise will soon be home to a brand new twin rink arena. Mayor Ralph Wiseman says a committee compromised of the town council, municipal affairs and consultants, intends to choose the successful bidding construction company in February. Wiseman says the plan is to have the sod turned in the spring. He says the arenas will be added on to the Youth and Community Centre. He says it's the gateway to a 256 acre recreational park.

Multiplex Centre Coming to Mt. Pearl

Early in the new year, the city of Mount Pearl will start raising steel for the largest capital project taken in the city's history. Work will continue in 2013 on a $32-million multiplex centre that will be adjoining the Reid Community Centre. As of now, the project is 20 per cent complete, with the majority of the work to do completed in 2013. Mayor Randy Simms says the centre should be up and running by 2014. Simms says it is by far the biggest project undertaken by the city. Simms says the centre will have two swimming pools, one will be competitive, the other will be a training pool. He says a splash pad will be added for younger children. In addition to this, Simms says there will be a new expanded gymnasium with new equipment. Simms says the facility will be used for more than just recreational activities. Simms says it will be three to four times larger than the existing facility. He says it will have a space for the arts community, a retail space and have multi-purpose rooms. The Reid Centre, Simms says, will be enhanced as well.

Local Restaurants Make Top 50

Newfoundland is home to two of Canada's Top 50 restaurants. Raymonds in St. John's and Atlantica in Portugal Cove - St. Phillips were named amongst what are deemed to be the best places to eat in Canada. The Top 50 list, which was published by Maclean's, aims to achieve a balance of old and new, cheap and pricey, casual and posh restaurants. The magazine says the only thing they all have in common is the promise of an all-but-assured good dining experience. Maclean's says Canadians in the market for a good meal in one of the country's major cities have never had so many varied, quality options in so many different categories. Both Newfoundland restaurants have been previously honoured with the title of Best New Restaurant by Air Canada's En Route magazine -- Atlantica in 2007 and Raymonds in 2011.

Guys, Mike K just confirmed that we'll be getting our own section!

It won't be a full Local (which is what Halifax has, with all the different sections within its section), which is good. It's just going to be a single St. John's section with one directory that contains all of our threads.

It's interesting how the old town area stays VERY dark while Kenmount Road is blindingly bright. It's the same of the Elizabeth Avenue area and also Mount Pearl (when it's visible).

I often get ideas about where to go next from your, "Anyone know what's up with X...?" posts - so if there's anything you're thinking, "I wish SHH would get X for a change...", speak up!

that and the other stuff at MUN like the extension on the bldg behind the business building and the reclad of a the building on the end of campus across from the arts and culture centre


- the RNC headquarters could use an update
- stavanger area including majors path area
- sandara (I think its called) in mount pearl
- stuff in CBS like the highways and the manuals interpretation centre
- the airport's new road now has lights and there is some type of development across the road from the old building
- has any clearing or anything started in glencrest?
- any other activity in mount pearl/ paradise?

I did HSC and MUN today. I'm just back from MUN... I don't think I'll ever recover from the ugly...

Guys, I'm going to create a MUN thread. We really should have one. There are a lot of things on the go there, and will be in the future. And very few of them would merit their own thread... but it's enough to be separate from the main project thread.

EDIT: O.K., it's started. I'll need help, though... I know next to nothing about MUN.

Should we have a separate HSC thread as well, going forward? I'm less sure about that one. But we're going to have our own section... we want to encourage people to join us and participate. If someone happens to be interested in just HSC, it'd be a great value to them to have a separate thread for it.
