EDMONTON - Edmonton isn’t mentioned in the same breath as startup hubs like San Francisco or Chicago and that’s perfectly fine with an entrepreneurial community that is flourishing nonetheless.

In fact, they prefer it.

“I really feel Edmonton is the sleeper startup community of the country,” said Ken Bautista, CEO and co-founder of incubator/accelerator Startup Edmonton. “I feel that we have the resources, the talent and the connections. We’re not trying to be another Silicon Valley. We want to embrace what we do here.”

I posted the following note at C2E the other day, so apologies if you've read it already:

I'm involved in the creation of a product many of you may already know about, the Inventory of Major Alberta Projects (IMAP), by Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education. This is a listing of all private & public capital projects in the province over $5 million in value, and currently charts about $200 billion worth of them.

Last month we launched a brand new website for the IMAP, available at: http://www.albertacanada.com/busines...-projects.aspx. It uses a Google Map interface to plot the location of all our projects, which we hope people find much more useful than the former PDF version.

On Monday we launched a new Twitter account entirely dedicated to the IMAP: http://twitter.com/ABMajorProjects. We'll use this account for real-time updates about project additions, changes, news, and other chat related to the construction & development industries in Alberta. I invite you to follow us via the link above! We intend for it to be not only a broadcast of info, but a two-way means to engage our users and even gain information on projects that we're missing from the IMAP.

I've personally used this site for many years, and have gained much value from it. I invite you to interact with and participate in the new IMAP. It has a very large national following, and is a great means to promote the amazing economic activity happening within the province and Edmonton.

Expect to see the Chandos signs removed from the Mayfair site. They are out ITC out of Calgary are in. Cost over runs have slowed this project by the sounds of it. I also heard Clark was having issues with the owners as well.

I did notice as I went by the other day that the LRT tunnel is now marked out on the surface.

New Muttart Lights Debut Brightens the Year’s Longest Night

December 21, 2012

On the longest, darkest night of winter, the Muttart Conservatory’s new light display will bring a warm glow to the pyramids. December 21, 2012 is the official debut and Heather Seutter, Director of the Muttart Conservatory, says staff members are pleased to have the lights ready in time for the holidays.

An array of 156 colour-changing light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been installed inside the pyramids. The light will reflect off structures within the pyramids, generating a different look from each vantage point. The effects will be enhanced by the new style of lighting which enables the choice of different colours and even allows for motion, such as waves of light.

“We’re tremendously excited to bring such an important landmark back to Edmonton’s night skyline,” adds Seutter, “and it couldn’t have happened at a better time of year.”

The lights will be turned on at 6pm on the winter solstice and continue year-round as an astronomical clock turns on the lights from sundown to 1am on most evenings. They can also be seen from inside the pyramids on Thursday nights, when the Conservatory is open until 9pm.

I mentioned this a few posts back. Actually ITC is Vancouver-based. They entered the Calgary market about 2 years ago and have moved into Edmonton lately.

The second phase in the Boyle Renaissance Project not only has a new name, but will use a unique energy-generating system.

The affordable-housing project for seniors will be named Renaissance Tower, Darlene Lennie of the Métis Capital Housing Corp. announced at a news conference Friday.

"We thought it was very fitting because it is for seniors and disabled Edmontonians," Lennie said...
