Are you kidding me? Sure there are bad planners out there but they have almost ZERO power in determining where development goes. As a planning consultant everything and I mean EVERYTHING is decided by politicians. Planners are in essence, qualified advisers to the local mayor and council. Ocean front properties are a boon for communities because of the high assessments they can get for the properties...until a disaster strikes.

An article that some may be interested in reading (I'm always interested in Toronto stuff) about companies moving back from Mississauga to downtown Toronto so that they can attract all the young professionals that now live downtown and don't want to commute.

It also touches on downtown residents getting rid of their cars, something I'm sure steveosnyder would love to read (although if people in downtown Toronto with their subways and density are just doing it now, I'm sure we're a long long ways away).

Haha, I wasn't necessarily meaning to bring that up again, but it is nice to see the suburban -> downtown trend working for head offices too.

That is part of the creative class concept that Richard Florida was talking about. People are starting families later but still working those well-paying jobs, so they're not satisfied or even demanding the family homes in the suburbs anymore. They want to be downtown. Post-baby boom, businesses had to move closer to those family homes. Now they have to move back downtown.

Even Thunder Bay is seeing this to a degree, with some companies that would have located offices in the suburbs a decade ago, choosing instead to locate in our downtown cores.

Manitobans can soon knock back Farmery
Brothers' farm grows new brew's makings

MANITOBA is one step closer to having its first home-grown microbrewery.
Lawrence and Chris Warwaruk, owners of Luxalune Gastropub on Osborne Street, have launched their first beer into the Manitoba market.
Farmery, a premium lager with 5.0 per cent alcohol, hits liquor stores and vendors this week and next.
The brisker the sales, the more quickly the two brothers will move on getting plans for their estate brewery in Neepawa off the ground.
"We're on the path to bringing the brewery back home to Manitoba. Every pint that we sell brings us one step closer," said Chris Warwaruk, 40.
A number of local establishments have already agreed to stock Farmery, including Canad Inns and The Grove pub.
