That would definitely work. A great location and it would allow for a huge footprint (I would think up to 150 parking spaces per level). The hotel extension above would create the "great wall" effect, but hey it'd be functional. A pedestrian overpass across Springdale Street to the new Hilton would be nice too.

Also, I wonder how many parking spaces will be added as part of the convention centre expansion. Probably not that many.

The current Delta lot would be a great place for three or four levels of parking, if it isn't too difficult to go down.
I'll throw this out as an "outside the box" thought for a large stand-alone garage, what about trying to convince Oceanex to give up some of its container space along Water St by the Magic Wok. You could put a huge garage there to service the whole three or four block area...maybe even a pedway over Water St, connecting to the "financial district".
I really like this idea! The delta parking lot could work well too, as they could probably build a few underground levels of that spot. If that was to happen, the only way to eliminate the 'great wall' effect would be to make the extension completely separate and unique from the current delta. And taller (which I don't have a problem with!)

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens as we continue to grow

And welcome to the forums cityslicker!!

They appear to be on schedule, one building for September 2013, the other January 2014. I believe each building has 250 rooms.

Here's a link to a time-lapse of the construction up to last summer.

and what they'll look like when finished

You know, looking at the Salvation Army building, I see a great opportunity to use the current facade (which I think looks fantastic) in a more modern building. Using examples from the thread I created in the Canada section, I'm thinking something along the lines of a much smaller version of this:

The above is a plan from Windsor, Ontario. The building as it stands looks like:

Note how they cut away much of the existing structure, really leaving only the exterior. Behind it (and above) they create a much more modern development, which is what will actually be used as an "interior".

Imagine, on a smaller scale, a very similar glass structure to the one depicted above, stretching four or five stories, and using the already existing facade of the Salvation Army building.

I'd love it.

Looks good. I'd want fewer blank walls than that example, though. As in... no blank walls, please.

But otherwise, yes, I like that idea.

This sorta happened in St. John's some years ago. When the city was widening Water Street West near the the train station from a 2-lane road to a 4-lane road, the contractor mistakenly cut down several of the mature trees that were there. Fortunately the city issued a stop work order before they were all cut down. I don't know how many trees we lost though but I know several were cut down.

The old Irving Station site on Water Street West has been fenced and has Republic Properties signs posted. Anyone know what's going on there?

I noticed that last night as well! Curious...

Maybe they're just trying to claim their property back from the cabbies, who seem to be our city's equivalent of squatters.

Republic Properties is just a front for Reardon Construction. It is run by the owners son Jeff Reardon who is also a real estate agent with Prudential. Jeff is a friendly guy, if you want to know something just look up his real estate email and ask him. He'll probably tell you anything you wanted to know about his properties unless it's something confidential.

Oh okay, I can see that being a nice place for condos similar to the 47 Lemarchant proposal. Republic Properties were also the ones that wanted to develop the two 5 story apartment buildings on duckworth on the old fire station and crazy horse site (which we still haven't heard anything on). If something is being planned, I expect it will have a nice design!

I really wish we heard more about that project, I thought it was great. Maybe in the new year...

Same here, I was really hoping this project would be off the ground by now. The initial renderings (although limited) looked great and would be a good fit for the area; I really like the curvature of the buildings.

On another note, I can't wait to see the Fortis retrofit started (and completed). The new look for both Fortis and TD buidlings will transform that section of Water St - for the better, that is!

You'll be waiting awhile. Let's hope that the Fortis retrofit goes quicker than the TD reclad. I posted in July 2011 (p. 131) that scaffolding had started on the Water St side of the TD building. So it's been 18 months and there's still a bunch of work to do (including getting the red brick off the top for Townie709... ).
