That is truely frightening as BC roads are generally in poor shape. I haven't driven in QC in a long time but do remember dodging debris from crumbling retaining walls.

It's a lot of fun on a bike. Going slow lets you enjoy the scenery.Did Banff to Radium and back as a a training run back in May. Parts of Sinclair Canyon dropping into Radium channel the creek under the highway.

I always found BC roads to be in decent shape but underbuilt.

Maybe it's different outside of the lower mainland?

Well I'll be damned. Every single time I've been along that section of road, I've always been trolled by long queues and always thought to myself "this should be an autoroute from Ottawa to Sudbury. Why are they not working on this?"

I actually found traffic dropped off around Mattawa, but started to pick up again around Rutherglen. The section between North Bay and Sudbury is nothing short of intolerable.

CBC News:

Utility pole in middle of Quebec highway causes headaches

Construction crews were working today to remove a utility pole in the middle of a highway that has caused headaches for drivers on a provincial highway east of Montreal.

Transport Quebec construction crews repaved a section of Route 251 two months ago, but instead of removing the utility pole back then, they paved around it.

...

Its a problem in BC too. Utilities like Telus & Shaw can get away with taking up to 2 years to relocate wires and poles if they're where the road is widened.

Many roads are built around the poles (typically blocking the right travel lane) until they are removed.

Coming from Ontario, where the poles were removed before any other work was done, I'm baffled by this still.

One of the reasons BC's roads are so poor is because of the grading

The actual surface isn't the problem, its the constant bumps and dips in all the highways from not actually being flat

Completely agree.

Another anti-Newfoundland conspiracy: the Canadian government purposely put the TCH through the ugliest portions of the province, whenever possible, to limit tourism.

I do agree that traffic has increased on that section recently, and North Bay to Sudbury is definitely too busy.

Does anyone have a list of expressway kms per province? It seems to me that Quebec has considerably more than Ontario in spite of a lower population. In this I would include the 11 up to North Bay and the Gardiner and DVP even though they are not 400-series. I would also include the 175 up to Saguenay.

Also, I found that MTO has 16,500 km of highways. MTQ has 29,000 km.

Saskatchewan may have even more relative to population.

In terms of limited access four lane divided highways, NB has a little over 800 km of expressways for a population of 750,000

This would work out to about 1 km of expressway for every 937 people in the province.

I challenge anyone to beat that!!

Is that partly because a large part of Ontario's formerly "provincial" highway network was transferred to municipal (county or regional) jurisdiction by the Harris government?

Quebec went crazy building expressways during the 1960s and 70s, even copying the U.S. Interstate numbering system. Ontario only had the 400, 401 and QEW for the longest time, in addition to a few small stretches here and there, although Ontario's geography means that the 401 serves a large part of the province all by itself.

Quebec has provincial highways within city limits. Ontario doesn't, with a few exceptions.

Most of Ontario's highway miles are in Northern Ontario, because there are no municipalities here. The MTO is the only organization that can manage our roads.

According to harls in the Québec section, Autoroute 50 between Gatineau and Mirabel (linking up to the Greater Montreal freeway network) is now completed and open as of late this morning.

According to my rough estimate, the highway is 160 km long, and about 60 km of it is divided with four lanes or more, and 100 km is currently a super-2.

.
Quebec downloaded quite a few provincial highways to municipalities as well, but it was nowhere near as massive as the downloading in Ontario was.
