Thunder Bay kind of has a freeway?

We're only three hours away from I-35 in Duluth, but the road to get there between Grand Marais and Thunder Bay makes our rural side streets look like freeways, themselves.

For McMurray in Alberta has about 60,000 people and as far as I can tell, there is no proper freeway connection. You also forget that Thunder Bay, with about 120,000 people, is in an even more outrageous situation since it's more than 12 hours away from another Ontario freeway. Only 6 hours to Manitoba, though.
Highway 17 on the north end of Algonquin Park is actually the least busiest section east of Sault Ste. Marie (about 3,000 AADT) - traffic is much higher between North Bay and Sudbury (about 8,000 to 11,000 AADT), and even between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie (about 5,000 to 14,000 AADT)

Saguenay, about 160k metro, only had a local Autoroute (A-70) until recently, however the widening of Route 175 to Quebec City (not true freeway but mostly 100km/hr) is almost done and will finish July 2013.

Does that include the AADT for Pembroke, Deep River, etc? I've driven along that route several times and I find it very hard to believe that the vehicle count is below 5,000.

The 175 is really a great improvement from what is was in the past. What a beautiful road they build! It used to be one of the most dangerous route in Canada, especially during winter and with the trucking.

That is in the least busiest section between Deep River and Mattawa.

A new 4-lane segment of Highway 26 in Ontario opened to traffic last week between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. I took these photos before construction was completed back in September but they are the best that I have.

It piss me off when I see how your highways in Ontario looks stronger than ours.

I'm not an engineer, but I'm pretty sure the footing's depth is bigger aswell as the asphalt compared to Qc's

They need a median divider there...

Ideally that should never have been built but instead a new alignment constructed on the west bank of the river.

How do you think we feel over in BC seeing Quebec and Ontario's highways absolutely blow ours out of the water??

Did you see that 4 lane undivided Donald Bridge without even a median barrier???

Why not pave the shoulder on the right hand side? Flying from 100 km/h + to hitting a gravel shoulder is dangerous.

Other than that, it looks great - did traffic volumes warrant a full freeway there? Never knew they were building anything of that sort up there.

I don't know why they didn't pave the shoulders. MTO typically does for new freeways, but Hwy 26 isn't really a freeway. It is only posted at 90km/h.

Since this photo was taken (and before the highway opened to traffic), the shoulders have been sealed with granular sealant, which hardens the gravel up significantly.

The Quebec autoroute network is quite impressive in scale but as far as pavement surfaces go BC is way better than us.

Correct about the median barrier.

As for the second point, if they really had a better idea, they should have just gone with a new alignment for the 4-lane highway. I would have built a new bridge just west of Golden then run a freeway on the west side of the Columbia River. In that area, the terrain is forgiving enough that such could have been posted at 110 km/h.

Oh yea ... there's nothing worse than Qc's pavements in Canada! ... though, it's getting a bit better in the last decade... there's is still a long way to reach the Canadian average I think
