One side of the hallway would be entirely glass providing views of the uptown - on those non foggy days of course! From inside the arena during the winter months, the southern exposure of the glass-fronted building would provide plenty of feel-good sunlight on an otherwise cool fall day. From the uptown it would reflect the shimmering harbour. From the highway, passers-by would (hopefully) be intrigued with the scale and unique non-utilitarian architectural features of the building and possibly decide to enter the uptown to explore.
A beautiful and practical concept.

And I would personally enjoy the views even with the fog!

You know...that isn't actually a bad idea. There's enough room up there, and given the stagnation of East Point lately i'm sure they'd consider the application. There is a hotel on site, after all.

One downside would be the tremendous traffic problems which already exist in the area.

in regards to the 4-PLEX...

A nice multipurpose facility on Bayside would be nice, somewhere near the new Tim's maybe. Or how about a facility up on the Costco hill like was mentioned along with a Crystal Palace type development.

I can hear the taxpayers now, chanting "Taj Ma-haul".

Coast Guard site development deal close, group says
Could be worth up to $100M

The former Coast Guard site in Saint John is close to having a development deal in place, according to the Saint John Waterfront Development Corp.

The organization is in discussions with a developer about a project estimated to be between $80 million and $100 million, said general manager Kent MacIntyre.

"We are progressing quite nicely with a developer and we'll have something to say in the near future," he said, declining to divulge any details.

"The end is near for this project for developing that site. I can safely say that."

In July, MacIntyre expected to announce a multi-million dollar deal to develop the prime waterfront property by the end of the summer.

At that time, he suggested it might include retail, residential and commercial properties, which could bring in at least $1 million in tax revenue for the city.
Development discussed for almost a decade

The city has been talking about developing the site, now dubbed the Fundy Quay, for almost a decade.

Six years ago, the Hardman Group entered into a memorandum of understanding with the city to bring an "urban community" to the waterfront property.

The plan was to start with a hotel and condominiums, then add office and retail space.

But those plans were shelved after Irving Oil Ltd. shelved it plans to build a world headquarters at the adjacent site, Long Wharf.

Now the city is looking to develop both properties, said Mayor Mel Norton.

"It's one of the last pieces of our downtown core that are undeveloped," he said.

"It's those kinds of assets that this community has that we want to see developed and we want to see leveraged for not only for the benefit for people in the community but also the whole province really."

The city bought the old Coast Guard site from the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans for $2.8 million in January 2011.

Waterfront Saint John looked at 20 proposals for developing the site before narrowing it down to the one currently being considered.

The mayor would like to see a four-pad arena at the Long Wharf site.

They ought to put it on the hill where everyone thought the Wal-Mart Supercentre was going to be.

Really tired of hearing 'could, 'soon!', and 'future plans' about the Coast Guard site. It needs to start moving soon.

Interesting - I hadn't noticed, and I drive by there daily.

Gonna go down and take a peek.

Furthermore, what is the Harbour Bridge Authority Building being used for now? Is it just sitting vacant?

Good News - Brick Building corner of Charlotte and Union

The building has been sold. It is going to be renovated in the spring with repointed brick and new windows. The upper floors will be residential with commercial on ground level. The wooden structure beside it is the same owner but it could not be saved.

That is good news. I understood that the upper floors could not be used until a fire escape was installed and this was impossible with the wooden structure in place. Some very positive news lately.....Gothic Arches sold and to be reonvated and HOPEFULLY an iminent announcement on the Coastguard site.

With the amount of development and investment ongoing at the current UNBSJ location i'd find it unlikely for them to be moving in the next 50 years.
