I think people are wrong about the WCB lot. The concern is that the WCB employees have parking close to the building not that the lot never be developed. If a developer came up with a plan that say included tripple the current parking on that site with at least the current number of spots allocated to the WCB plus cash for the purchase of the land and had a plan for temporary parking during the construction that was suitable it would be developed. People are just not thinking outside the box enough or are not willing to pay the costs needed to develop the site.

There is a saying that goes something like: if you have enough money you can buy anything. That is definitely the case here.

PS: One "solution" might be to split the lot, build a parkade close to the WCB building with sufficent parking and then freeing up the remaining portion of the site for development. This would then have the potentinal to require less temporary parking elsewhere durring the construction phase. It would also help if they can close the lane that current runs between the building and the surface lot.

Looks like it'll be pretty cool to drive under. I'm starting to like it more now that I've had some time to really look at it. Not amazing, but certainly a hell of a lot better than what was there

it's good to see three street-edge condo buildings going up along st. mary's lately with relatively no hoopla. that strip is starting to get some good density along it. could this eventually be something like a new osborne south? there is a lot of money round those parts..

So Stuart-Olsen Dominion wraps up work on the stadium just in time to take on the Convention Centre. Perfect. Lets just hope they've FIRED the project manager from the stadium debacle. 14 months to build a 33,000 seat stadium.... in this climate... sheesh.

But yes, I think this fits fine with the existing building -- construction over the street like that will definitely add a very dramatic 'big city' feel to the area.
Lets hope that a major international hotel brand is preparing to sign on and that we'll hear about it during the construction of the convention centre component.

It's official, Marshall's is coming to town. I've never shopped there so no biggie to me but I guess it's important to some and interesting it's their 1stlocation outside of Ontario. Main floor of the new Western Financial building at Polo Park. Also, 2 other retailers are close to signing for the other two spots (1 new to city).

In all reality, you are right. If a developer with deep enough pockets and a downtown enhancing project came along the Province would have to take a serious look at it. I am sure that part of the deal would have to be to provide the appropriate number of "subsidized" parking spots to the employees of the WCB. I am also sure that this aspect of the deal would have to be hidden from the public eye to ensure the deal goes through.

Only thing built there in the past year is a fence around the site and a couple signs. I thought they had some kind of timeline to get there project completed. [as per their condition of aquiring that valuable land for free!]
Not saying the Upper Fort garry Gate isn't an important part of the local history, But really. "friends of fort garry" shit or get of the pot!!!

Does anybody know where all the customers are going to go to if and when all these hotels close down?

Will they be out in the 'burbs at the Curtis, the Villa, the Spike the Big A, the Stock Exchange etc.? They have money to spend and I am sure they will find somewhere to spend it.

Nope. They will be in all the new bars in the SHED development.
