With that logic, the city has been beating a dead horse for nearly 40 years.

Seriously, this new expansion (a la renovation...?) is a lot better than the giant limestone/plastic cube we had for nearly 4 decades. These naysayers, to some extent, do have a valid concern though.

I know there WILL be a hotel, and I DO recall seeing some early renders of a 15 story-ish grey and/or glass highrise proposal for the Convention Centre area.

I am curious to know a) if the render I described is still the general plan for the hotel, or if nobody's finalized what the hotel component will actually look like yet, and b) where the hell this hotel will actually be situated. Will it be built "on top" of the C.C. expansion just south of York Avenue, or perhaps on the other surface parking lot to the immediate east of the one I just mentioned?

I was quite excited for November 13th to roll around, because I thought we would learn all about both the C.C. AND the hotel, but today I can't seem to find any new info on the hotel component specifically. Am I alone in the dark? Any insight into my queries would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Help a fellow geek out so I can get some bloody sleep tonight!
the hotel will happen...it just has not been designed yet.....it is still in negotiations.

priority right now is to get the convention centre built and running...the hotel is the easy part.

Klaus (WCC CEO) said in radio interview that there will be a hotel, but it's not WCC building it,but it will be on WCC land and they will receive revenue from it.

BTW, i think the glass walls look georgeous and I love how they are going to be attached on the 3rd level to create 1 big huge third floor.

Recently I was in San Fran and their CC spans 3 unique buildings that are not really connected (2 are through bsm't), although they were huge, a pain to get around.

... apparently people were hoping for a convention centre that had tobacconists, cobblers and barbershops lining the street front.

Just to be clear on this point for everyone. The hotel will not be "ON" the Convention Centre as previously speculated. Lakeview has had plans to build a hotel on their property west of the WCC for years pending the approval of the expansion. I believe they will build one of their proposed hotels regardless but are waiting to see if this new proposed hotel materializes before building their second hotel. As for locations for the "mystery hotel" i will give 3 sites for thought - the Carleton Hotel site as mentioned in the Sun, the piece of property kitty-corner to the NE corner of the WCC on the Church property and as a part of the new MPI complex.

Again, patience people.

Personally I think the church property would be a long shot at best. The WCB parking lot that is just east of the planned expansion though seems prime for a development possibility. Yes, parking for WCB may be an issue but if the surface lot was replaced with multi-level parking in the new structure that could be offset and potentinal provide a new revenue source to WCB if they own the surface lot.

^ from what I have heard regarding the WCB parking, they will "give up that lot for development with you pry it from their cold, dead hands".

I guess I'm a little short on patience. I have no time for Levit who still won't commit even thought the WCC has. WCC needs to make this happen. It doesn't matter how big a convention centre you have - if there aren't rooms to support it, it won't happen. I had huge trouble organizing a mid-sized convention a few years ago. 500 delegates. And after the conference was announced, the Sheraton closed down. We had delegates in 4 or 5 hotels as far away as the Fort GArry and Inn at the Forks. Conferences don't like that. The hotel has to happen soon, if not simultaneously.

I think they've always considered that site in their planning. Check their website. At one time they were talking about a 'Railside Development' which was mixed use - at grade commercial, parking, residential above. Even ten or twelve years ago they were planning for that site.

Even if they don't have any plans, it makes some sense for them to control it. I wish they would be more aggressive about developing that side of the Forks though (west of Waterfront Drive).

Looks like Railside is the solely on the lot further south. But Parcel 6 is listed as future development site.

Drew is right. I was told from someone working on the WCC that that lot was not an option for anything. Downtown Winnipeg will 100 story buildings on every corner and every block and that lot would still be surface parking for WCB employees.

the hotel people need to stop worrying about that. They wouldn't move forward with a project of this magnitude if they weren't certain a hotel would be included as part of it. The expansion was contingent on there being a hoteller signed to build a hotel on one of the adjacent lots to the convention center. i think their just waiting on the reendering and all the paper work to be completed before they make an announcement. But im sure a hotel is already a forgone conclusion hopefully they attract a big name hotel chain to the city that is totally new to our market. I dont expect it to be over 20 floors but it would still have some impact on our ever changing skyline.
