I'm heading back to California tomorrow, and I might start taking trips to Downtown to take pics as well.

I don't see how HunterK took offense to any of those posts that he would leave the forum. Seems a bit infantile IMO.

Updated rendering of the 8th and Hope project from Brigham's blog. No asshat.

The building looks staggeringly better now, without the asshat. I actually really like it. Very austere.

EDIT: And here is the projects website. http://altabywood.wordpress.com

Anyways, I have some news regarding the Wilshire Grand tower. The highest inhabitable floor of the tower will not make this the tallest tower in the city. However, assuming all goes according to plan with the city and fire department signing off on this (and it's looking like it will), the spire will push this building to be the new tallest tower in the city at 1100'

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The owner of the City West apartment project Canvas L.A. has come up with an alternative for 5,000 square feet of never-filled ground-floor commercial space.
Rather than continue to try to find a restaurant or retail tenant, the space could become homes. Canvas officials are scheduled to go before the Department of City Planning on Nov. 19 to apply for permits that would allow them to build six residential units in the retail space at the 204-apartment building. Canvas officials would not comment on the proposed change for the building at 138 N. Beaudry Ave. The property was developed by Arizona-based Alliance Residential and opened in 2008. Three years later, it was sold to LaSalle Investment Management for $62.5 million. Although rents range from about $1,800 for studio units to $5,000 for three-bedroom apartments, the building owners have never been able to fill the commercial space facing Beaudry Avenue.
It was a dumb idea to have retail on Canvas seeing how isolated it is. But I think Canvas is a nice looking building perfectly appropriate for areas of downtown like City West and Little Tokyo. It looks better in person than in pictures it should be said. Midrise buildings like these add lots of density if built correctly.

Excellent. Are they signing off on not having a helipad or simply just having a spire next to the helipad?

It looks like no helipad at all. Source is an executive from AC Martin.

im guessing he is refering to the 70th floor.

If this is true im guessing that the 70 th floor will be around 980 - 1000 ft, the crown at 1,100, and spire around 1,200 ft

based on the renderings the crown is definetely above 1,000 ft tall

Not nearly as elegant as a Vancouver tower. More like Northern Virginia. I could easily see this in Tysons Corner or Arlington.

What's with the Vancouver hate anyway? Its one of the nicer skylines in North America. We should be so lucky that DTLA starts resembling DT Vancouver.

That's the problem: Sure Vancouver has a nice skyline but it's also one of the most boring skylines filled with almost nothing but residential towers.

A Vancouver style residential tower is nice don't get me wrong but DTLA should aim higher in terms of design and quality.

With that said, I think that iHope is an attractive building.
