The University of Utah’s eminent role in the 2002 Winter Games has been embodied for the past decade in Olympic Cauldron Park on Rice-Eccles Stadium’s south end.

But thoughts of expanding the stadium since the U. now belongs to the Pac-12 have university officials talking to the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation about what to do with elements of Cauldron Park if it’s displaced by new south-bowl seating...

Two things I have always liked about Cauldron Park is that the Cauldron remains in the same location, the stadium, as it was during the Games., and that visitors coming to games could read a little about the Games. The things I don't like are the location, it really isn't in a convenient spot for people just visiting SLC not here for a game, and that the Hoberman Arch is in a frozen state.

Here are a couple of ideas I came up with.

Even though the area had nothing to do with the games, the memorabilia and little museum could be incorporated into the neighborhood between Central Station and the Rio Grande Depot. Use the arch, in it's working form, as a stage for a medium sized neighborhood park or plaza, place the Cauldron at the 300 S "entrance" to the park, but place it towards the street so that it won't be blocked by buildings, and is always viewable from both Central and Rio Grande. Then place other items, like those along the fence at the current Cauldron Park, along 300 S and a new N/S road, engaging visitors into the neighborhood. The Cauldron being visible would act as a way to catch peoples eye and bring them from Central or Rio Grande (if the market locates there) into the neighborhood.

Another idea, would be to incorporate those same ideas into the new market, if it doesn't go in the Rio Grande. "Salt Lake City, Olympic Market"

The apartments will have an urban feel. Units will feature granite counter tops, washers and dryers, walk-in closets, balconies, and oversized windows.

The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2013.

I posted about this on the Politics forum but I will also post it here:

If you want to see a Convention Hotel built in Salt Lake, make sure that you and everyone you know votes for those with a (D) next to their name for Salt Lake County Council and Salt Lake County Mayor.

I have heard first hand that all the Republicans are against any public money going to the Convention Hotel. All the hotel brands and private developers have stated they won't build a hotel without public monetary support.

I have also heard that the county has been approached by at least a dozen developers who are willing to build the hotel if they receive some sort of public subsidy.

So if there are dreams of a Convention Hotel & Convention Center expansion, make sure to vote Democrat for County Council and County Mayor. Otherwise we will have to wait for another election cycle to begin the process again if it ever has another chance.

In my dream last night, I saw the rendering of the new CC hotel tower. It was skinny and 57 stories. So let it be done.

...just playing devils advocate here but you can't prove that there is no such thing, just as he can't prove that there is. So you should probably steer away from stating it as matter-of-fact.

The new luxury apartments on 4th East between 1st and 2nd South

There has been a lot of talk about the need for a laundry mat. I don't think that the laundry mat or the pizza parlor are being demolished. The foundation and fence runs right along the pizza parlor (the laundry mat is the next building to the South and can't be seen in this picture). You can also check out in the next photo that it looks like the boundaries of the new apartment complex wrap around the laundry mat but that it will be staying.

Ok.....how about this.....since we are bored how about we play a guessing game of how many floors will the future CC hotel have when the first rendering comes out hopefully in the near future.

I'll start.

My guess................32 floors. It won't be the tallest, but it will be top three, maybe four.

This is a showcase of great contemporary architecture going on in Montreal! I wanted to show this, because I get tired of the retro historical stuff that gets proposed here in Salt Lake City. Neo-classical architecture isn't necessarily bad, it's the fake-watered down, stucco or non-stucco stuff that we see. It seems like people are afraid of contemporary architecture because they just have not exposed to good contemporary architecture. Often times in Salt Lake City, you'll see a watered down bland type of modern architecture. Anyways, before you start defending fake historical architecture, please look at the link I posted,
