Are you sure about that? I moved here from Vancouver 6 years ago, and while, yes I could boast all about the 'better' standard of living on the West Coast, numerous rec opportunities, etc. etc. I have to say the standard of living here with respect to land and housing costs doesn't compare! My wife and I are actually looking at getting an acre (or two) out by Steinbach, and apparently you can throw in a 4-5 BR 2500sq/ft house (with finished basement) for around $350K. Meanwhile, I speak with my friends back home who are struggling to pay their massive mortgages on townhouses, or condos, while trying to raise their first child, find daycare (which apparently is double the cost that it is here), AND do it all on the same income. If they do manage to qualify to buy a single family house, they're going to be living somewhere out in the Valley, facing long commutes (equating to less time with family). I guess if you're talking about a family with two six-figure incomes in Calgary, then, yes, nothing is going to compare to that here in Winnipeg. As for rec opportunities, I think some of the best parts of Winnipeg are within a 2-hour drive. Access to forests, lakes, parks, cottages, swimming, fishing, hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, x-country skiiing, beaches, etc. all with the added bonus of not being gawdy, overpriced, and overcrowded, like Banff and Canmore seem to be becoming. I dunno, I think Winnipeg and its surrounding area are not given as much of a liveable credit as it should be. Big incomes and access to expensive toys is not all there is to life.

But before we get into an off-topic discussion in the 'construction thread,' perhaps we should move this discussion either to a new thread, or to 'Western Espresso'

For those interested in comparing the costs of owning in various parts of the country, check out the RBC affordability index (released quarterly). And yes Vancouver is far and away the most expensive place to own a home.

http://www.rbc.com/newsroom/pdf/HA-0827-2012.pdf

Here's a sample of some of the data from the report. Rather than comparing pure housing costs, it takes the percentage of a median household income that would go towards housing costs (mortgage, taxes, utilities) of the average home sold in the quarter.

Detached Bungalow:
Vancouver: 91%
BC: 69.7%
Toronto: 54.5%
Calgary: 36.7%
MB: 37.8%

2-Story:
Vancouver: 93.8%
BC: 74.2%
Toronto: 63.9%
Calgary 37.2%
MB: 39.6%

I think the rule of thumb for lenders is 33% of income should go towards housing costs. So baisically a house in Vancouver, or even BC in general, is well out of the reach of affordability for the average family.

Keeping the focus on Winnipeg construction, the affordability of housing in MB. It's about on par with the rest of Western Canada. A little better than SK, a little worse than AB.

Just trying to get this back on track here:

Is this still getting built? It’s a very kick — idea, and sorry but surprising to be built in Winnipeg and not T.O. or Vancouver. No offence Peg, sorry.

This has been dubbed the "Pencil Tower" by roccerfeller of SSC
Is it still going ahead too?

I dont know what is happening with this project but it looks good.
Centre Point

What happen with the Winnipeg Convention expantion?

And finally, a really cool shot of Down Town Winnipeg with her new jewl.
Thank you to the member of SSP that captured it, I got it from google and it didnt say who you were.

First project as far as i know is still tentatively a go ahead. i assume its depending on pre-sales.

Realtor selling them:
http://jfratthe.com/2012/08/62m-condos-62-macdonald-avenue/

The 3rd one, centrepoint is a go ahead and is under construction with an added condo tower component. Not familiar with the second one. I think we're still awaiting an official unveiling of the convention centre expansion.

The Flying Saucer will go ahead. I think he means the second one - Pencil Tower has little chance of being built.

Remember Mininari, some on this forum equate paying a couple thousand extra in taxes a year as "poor standard of living", regardless of the ridiculous costs of living, 1 hour plus commutes, etc. found elsewhere.

Can someone please remind me, What Missisauga's city status has to do with Winnipeg contruction!

If it was it's own city, how come I can't find a single thread with it's name in either the Toronto or Ontario
thread listing?

Whoa, hey RHINO! I've never seen you post on SSP before! Welcome!

For the record, I just called it the pencil tower because it was penned that on the David Penner Architects website.

cheswick pretty much covered it all; first one is still a "go" as far as we know. Again, likely dependent one pre-sales

second is very unlikely to go through primarily due to zoning laws (iirc) though I think Biff or TV suggested there is a slim chance it could still go through i.e. they said it was not dead per se..though we should consider it so

third is pretty much U/C right now, and as cheswick stated, along with an additional condo tower

and yes that fourth one is a cool shot...I think it was vid who coloured the Artis building in

There's some pretty sweet Peg shots floating around...chrisallard had some really badass ones, really cool nighttime stuff..you should do a forum search for those

Seriously lol, he's editing the papers, he's talking to the kids, he's wandering around Winnipeg giving orders. Plus Winnipeg could use some more subsidized housing, better public transit and Nu, Pogodi!
