it's because a number of german airports can no longer operate after certain hours, a lot of cities have imposed or set up laws to stop landing/take offs around 11 pm - they had to cut a number of routes due to the new rules

I thought it might also have something to do with Etihad Airlines joining SkyTeam and their new strategic alliance with KLM-Air France and 39% stake in Air Berlin (a member of One World). Air Berlin is now seeing a cash infusion is expanding routes and integrating its subsidiary's as well while strengthening where its HUBS are...and Frankfiurt is not one of them (thankfully). Franfurt will end up being Star Alliance only.

I love these excerpt:

"Qatar Airways' planned entry to the Oneworld grouping late next year or in early 2014 raises questions about the future membership of existing participants including AMR Corp.'s AAMRQ -0.52% American Airlines, which is in talks about a potentially conflicting deal with Dubai-based Emirates Airline, the largest carrier in the Middle East.

Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi, on Monday announced a pact with SkyTeam member Air France-KLM and Oneworld's Air Berlin PLC in a further sign of how existing ties are breaking down. Emirates, which has vowed not to join an alliance, last month announced plans for an extensive alliance with another Oneworld member,Qantas Airways Ltd. QAN.AU +0.38% of Australia.

"The simple days of, you are either in one of the three alliances or you are outside an alliance are now an idyllic past," said Craig Jenks, president of Airline/Aircraft Projects, a consulting firm based in New York."

But Fedex would route it all via Memphis, and DHL, god know where they'd send it.

I used to work in the Courier industry and sent a shipment from London to New York once...even though the package was in their NY office they still had to route it down to Burlington to clear customs before sending it back to NY..at least until I mentioned it was a news report for the evening news and if the news station did not have the video then they would just have to show something in it's place, namely how inefficent the courier company was...got it cleared and delivered in record time

The main reason for this is cost as well as infrastructure...you would have thought as so many flights across the Pacific land at Anchorage they would all have sorting facilities there, but nope..just not worth the cost, and generally things are still delivered the next day...except for poor old us north of the border...just not worth the extra costs to them for the relatively small number of packages involved, especially in Edmonton, not without paying a premium.

If you think the video says absolutely nothing, their Strategic plan is even better...
http://www.portalberta.com/publications/Port%20Alberta%20Strategic%20Plan%202012-2014.pdf

It has neither a strategy or a plan.
This just gives a bunch of general statements and motherhood jargon. A strategic plan needs to provide a vision, mission statement, strategic goals, goals within those strategic goals, objectives, strategies on how to achieve those objectives, and policies stemming from the strategies.
This so called "plan" is garbage. It is a brochure at best.

Just more of the same lame stuff with lack of direction and concrete actions that comes from this group and EIA. The plan does have a vision and mission but very weak. I hope they didn't pay a consultant for this, and if they did I would not recommend hiring them.

It reminds me of the video that EIA just put out that would not be then seriously by any cargo business. Looks good for the EIA fanboys but that is about it.

EIA is doing a pretty good job. In fact, EIA did a hell of a lot more for Port Alberta before "Port Alberta" became incorporated (in 2010). Port Alberta at EIA had a lot of momentum but the feds took a different direction. you cant blame EIA for that.

What do the Feds have to with it other than some initial cash to study it more?

EIA is still on the PA board and an influencer so they are still involved.

Take a look at YYC, they used the momentum and are doing something with it. Unfortunately there is not enough market for 2 port Alberta's

That and Winnipeg leap-frogged Edmonton. That's scary to even think of.

This is another classic example of how intraregional bickering slows regional economic development.

The Feds had everything to do with it. They were going to fund it. Only the Feds can approve a free-trade zone.
The whole concept centred around the deep port at Prince Rupert. The closest shipping port in North America (not counting Alaska) is Prince Rupert. It takes less time for a container to reach Edmonton than it does to reach Vancouver. The advantage PR has over Alaska is rail and truck. Logistically, an intermodel Hub somewhere along the CN line makes sense. The Feds decided to invest in Winnipeg. With that, the original vision for Port Alberta was killed. What happened next was EIA could no longer be the focus of PA and as such EIA was no longer the lead. PA then became incorporated and the focus changed from the focus being concentrated at EIA to the focus being the entire region and EIA is just part of the puzzle. Leverage the local economic strength to justify a logistics hub in the Capital Region. The problem is exactly what I have said before. They don't know what Port Alberta is, they don't know what Port Alberta will be, and too many businesses and agencies assume that those who are part of PA know what they are doing.

Well, did Edmonton even get to the point of getting CN service to near EIA? That seems like a crucial step. If I recall Winnipeg's layout correctly, they are from an initial point closer to implementation.

It doesn't hurt that Winnipeg I believe is less isolated from US markets than Edmonton.

Also, believing that localization manufacturing would happen instead of just logistic sorting and transshippment seems a bit of a misstep.

[QUOTEThat and Winnipeg leap-frogged Edmonton. That's scary to even think of. ][/QUOTE]

Regardless what happens with Port Alberta, the area surrounding the aiport is about to explode with growth. The airport guys who loose there shit whenever some exotic cargo plan from mongolia arrives may not be satisified. But we will soon see another Nisku scale industrial/transportation logistics zone surrounding the airport and a scale of private investment that places like winnipeg cant even fathom despite all the federal favours they are recieving.

With CP's new intermodel yard currently being built the intire east side of highway 2 will be developed from the City to leduc. The west side will likely be completely developed in 5 years.
