Had a pretty cool private tour of the streetcar barns at Fort Edmonton Park yesterday.
In the foreground is car 4612, originally purchased by the Toronto Transit Commission, which served Toronto from 1951 till 1995. Also from Toronto is car 24, built in 1914 and used on the Toronto Suburban Railway.
Built in 1912, car 42 served the City of Edmonton until 1951.
Delivered to the City of Edmonton in 1930, car 80 served until the streetcar line was decommissioned in 1951. Before restoration the car served as a diner in Dawson Creek BC.
Car 247 was built in 1921 and served in Osaka Japan until 1990. The ERRS purchased the car for parts but decided on a full restoration upon discovering its excellent condition on delivery.
This is the mercury arc rectifier at Fort Edmonton Park in operation for the last time before decommission. A mercury arc rectifier coverts high voltage alternating current into direct current, in this case, used to power Fort Edmonton Park's trolleys and streetcars. Due to environmental regulations this rectifier is being decommissioned and will be replaced with a solid state rectifier formerly used on Edmonton's LRT system. The mercury arc rectifier was invented by Peter Cooper Hewitt in 1902.
And a short clip of the thing in action:
