Smith crossing. I spent every weekend day down there with my friends building forts and crap around grade 5-6. I also remember the house built into the hill.

If anyone is curious about where all I went, here's a map (with some annotations) generated by My Tracks for Android:
https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=217053806192116776259.0004ca3df5dc0a15a4bbe&msa=0

Edited to add: The annotated bitchiness about the multi-use trail along the LRT line is more notes to self in response to people who think that these things are at all useful to cyclist commuters instead of the roads. They are actually really horrible for commuting.

The valley is an incredible piece of wilderness in the city. Even in the winter it is a great hike. A great trek is from the NS right to the Henday.

^^ I realized that only after the fact, looking at the map later at home (hence the annotation "took a wrong turn at Albuquerque"). It was a bit of a shock to come right off a single track trail and find myself in some unknown suburban hell. Shoulda gone right instead of left...

What really got me, though, was riding along happily south of AHD only to run smack dab into a golf course. No way around it. No way through it even (I tried, only to run into another golf course, Windermere). It actually pisses me off that there's no way around or through them, they are built right up to the edges of both the river on the west, and the embankment on the east.

On top of that, despite having a pretty dry month this September, you can see all the mud and erosion around the golf courses from all the watering they do. When were these developments approved? They're just terrible in every way.

Don't insult my beloved Windermere It was an incredible course to be a jr. member of. River Ridge has struggled since its late 80s early 90s opening.

Speaking of golf courses... we played a round with some engineer friends last week at the Petroleum Club. Very nice course, very well kept. It looks like it has a multi-use trail around it... anyone ever been around there ?

As we are speaking about golf courses that get in the way, the one that really pissed me off last year was Edmonton Country club and golf course. There's just no way around that... Would be so easy to put a path from Fort Edmonton bridge along the bank to Donsdale Drive or what ever...

Oh, yeah, I hit that one last year, too. Went biking through the tall grass on the other side of the Fort Ed bridge, but couldn't find a way out of there either. Didn't even realize that was also due to a golf course, but I see it now on the map. Yeesh.

Until the landowner decides to subdivide their land, the city does not have the legal right to develop a trail through the property as its privately owned. They could expropriate but that's not worth their time. These golf courses have been there for many years.

As for watering, we have had more than enough rainfall over the past few months given the massive number of thunderstorms that have passed through. Most golf courses use water from their own retention facilities.

You probably took the same trail I did... Eventually there will be a paved trail with footbridge that connects to Terwilligar park from this area... and then another footbridge from Terwilligar park to Cameron Heights... Biking in this area will really kick ass after this.

I know how it works, thanks. I wasn't suggesting anything of the sort, only venting my frustration and annoyance.

Retention is one thing, but when it is is then reused and further destabilizes riverbanks, then it's still not good, regardless of the source of that water.
