Let's just hope 2012 doesn't happen with the Middle East and American elections. Since this threads ridiculously off-topic, might as well join the chaos.

I am also a little concerned about the decrease in parking spaces, by 100 or so spots, but then again there are more ancillary parking spots nearby...or perhaps that lot never filled up completely? Perhaps, the WCC views they are not decreasing parking spots by 99 but rather adding 185 to their present two levels?

Who knows. They must have a reason for not maintaining the 284 spaces.

Was that lot owned by WCC originally or did they have to purchase it for the expansion?
Remember, my quoted number of 185 spaces was taken from a proposal that did not win the development contract. It was just used as an estimate of what may be. I do not know how many spots are in the winning bid.

Just to clarify:

- Centrepoint is the Stantec Office/Alt Hotel/Condo project across from the MTS Centre that will be complete near 2014/2015.

- Centre Port Canada is the inland port and will take decades to be complete.

- The Journey to Churchill project at the Zoo will be complete in 2014. The Zoo redevelopment is a 5 to 10 year project. Next up will be a new $50 mil conservatory and then a continued redevelopment of the other areas of the zoo (great plains etc).

There are some major, significant projects that are not yet publicly known that will be very high on that list as well.

What is happening to the Zellers in the basement of the downtown HBC building? Has it closed? If so, a shame because the food floor was very convenient to those living downtown.

It's still open and there are no indiciations it will be closing soon by walking around it (shelves are still fully stocked, no blow out sales etc.)

They are planning on closing most of the remaining Zellers by March of next year but they could rebrand some of them.

Sidewalk widening as part of SHED. And, streetscaping, seating, lighting, and I believe, trees. Between Portage and Graham, not sure if it will run any further south. The first funnelator will be out front of the milennium libray, as a pilot.

The downtown location of Zellers IS closing, in March. I talked to the manager. Zellers no longer exists, and the Bay reportedly wants out of the building come the spring as well.

I agree it is a sad situation of almost tragic proportions - downtowners have been getting groceries there for decades, and it's the only full service grocery in the DT. All the seniors in Fred Douglas Place and the area go there and can't walk any further than that for groceries, so they are basically up 🞵🞵🞵🞵 creek come spring. So are the many newcomers who live DT and shop there.

Write your Councillor. Seriously.

So the city should set up a grocery store or what? If the demand for a grocery store is there any number of grocery chains will set up shop in the area. Pretty sure another use for the Bay building will be found if retail is pulled out.

Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
City will not release Civic Centre Parkade reports
By: Bartley Kives
Posted: 11:45 AM

The City of Winnipeg has refused to allow two Winnipeg media outlets access to engineering reports about the shuttered Civic Centre Parkade.
In August, the city shuttered the 46-year-old parkade due to structural concerns, citing potential safety issues. Within days, both the Winnipeg Free Press and radio station CJOB -- acting independently from each other -- filed freedom-of-information requests seeking access to engineering reports.
In a letter dated Sept. 28, the city denied the Free Press request for structural inspection reports for the parkade, dating back to 2009, when the Winnipeg Parking Authority’s business plan called for the structure to be repaired.

I live and shop downtown. The Zellers is by far the best store for price, convenience etc.

There is a Safeway right across the river - which works for me as I am beside the Leg, and I have AirMiles/Club Card. If you have these things the cost goes down - and you get miles -, and the location is second only to Zellers for me.

The IGA is really small, and it is over priced like a Mamma and Pop Shop. I will never shop at that IGA as it really isn't worth the cost nor the lack of selection.

There is a Giant Tiger, which is ok, but those stores were never really that great when it comes to Groceries, and once again a little overpriced.

If you really want super cheap groceries, and don't need any meat etc, go to Dollarama. Just don't expect great quality, and don't expect your bread to last for more than a week.

If cost is not a factor than I would suggest the Forks. There is tons of selection (Though I think the market should be expanded), and it is all good quality stuff. But once again that is quite a bit removed from most residential locations.

The thing about the Zellers is that if you live on the East Side take the number 11. If you live to the South take the 18, 66, 60, etc. It is literally the end point for every bus that tours through downtown as the entrance is right on Graham and Vaughn. You can't really beat that in terms of efficiency.

The Bay wants out of the building as well?!?!? That's really sad. Does it want to relocate somewhere else in the downtown core?

Perhaps a developer will buy the Bay building and entice a grocer for the main level and then the upper floors can be converted to condos, as has been done with the old Bay building in Victoria.
