Somebody should post a picture of the Capitol Theater addition that was on the front of the article. It's a a little too gaudy. It's too much! The previous version was much more subdued and respectful of the Capitol Theater. It doesn't need all that jazzy nonsense. I know the designer. He's a nice guy, and good with graphics, but he does a lot of funky stuff that is just frivolous. For example, the office buildings out at Cottonwood Mill that have those curved stripes that extend off the building, are his design. He began the design of the Rio Tinto Office Building out at Daybreak, but it took a more talented designer to finesse his original design to make it what it is today.

Actually, no, it wasn't. I know what you are talking about. But, before that one there was a version by GSBS, that was much more subdued (see the first one below). It had a similar massing concept in front, but the previous version's top was stepped back and did not have those big piers in front, nor the funky asymmetrical stripe. The top was stepped back. The newer version definitely competes with the capitol theater (see the second one below). I think any addition to the capitol theater should be subdued and secondary to it. This one wants to shout out like it's some sort of stepchild from Vegas!

I definitely like this version better! Remember, you won't be able to see the entire building from this angle, as there is another building that is missing from the foreground which will block most of the side view. The architecture along the side will only be enjoyed by pedestrians who walk along the mid-block path.

I also like the new version. While yes it is definetly different from Capital, it does do a good job in following design elements, particularly the elevations, the solid mass starts at the top of the lobby cornice and ends at the roof cornice. The criss cross design on the front and side compliments the criss cross pattern on the original Capital Theater. I like that it is modern and stands out, IMO that is what best makes the Capital stand out too. A stark contrast in design, but with elevational lines and design elements to combine the two.

I agree, it doesn't need that extra. The new design is tacky.

I know the source... but thanks for that extra picture. I'm just saying I think the old steeple could be re-used if the LDS church follows the same design concept as the Cambridge boston chapel for their south temple chapel.

Are they ripping down the weird parking garage building that always has a big vinyl "available" sign hanging on it? It seems like the building will be where that cool art exhibit is.. But it looks like they have landscaping where the parking garage building is... As much as I dislike that building it might make the intersection look less dense, especially with the other vacant land north of the property on west temple.

It's a fictional view, the office building is just absent from the rendering to create an ideal view.
I think I preferred the original design concept to this one.
