That was my initial thought too. But there are 17 floors on top of the podium. That leaves 7 floors for Podium. If that is the case, at least that leaves a lot for mixed use. I like the orientation on the lot. Looks as if it will be butted up against the sidewalk! Oops sorry HotWired. You can turn your head on that statement.

according to the Journal of Commerce, the Convention Centre expansion is 3 storeys plus a 3 storey hotel on top with 300 rooms. construction to start early 2013

Hmmm. I wasn't expecting that either. However there will be a lot of spin off development from this one, so I am not complaining. Also it removes one of the largest of Winnipeg's downtown parking lots and replaces it with something that will bring hundreds of thousands to our city over the next few decades. With that it is better than what one tower would bring.

Remember, a city such as Ottawa with multiple low-mid rise is much more attractive than one with empty parking lots. And Winnipeg is slowly making its way towards that goal.

i'm terrified of what the ground floor is going to look like. two blocks of blank walls with no sidewalk interaction along Carlton and Edmonton would be awful.

Just for context, the Fairmont has 340 rooms and stands 20 storeys tall. That will have to be one sprawling hotel building with 100 suites per floor!

Hmm....3 storey's and 300 rooms? That doesn't make much sense to me. Nor does it mesh with the Convention Centre expansion initial plans that showed off the hotel on top.

Still, I am just happy that one of the largest lots in downtown Winnipeg is being replaced with something(s) (as the 300$MM tag almost certainly isn't exclusively for the hotel + expansion + underground parking)

Yeah...that's what I'm thinking...100 suites/floor just, simply, does not make sense...90 000 sq feet? I suppose one never knows. 5 acres of planned development space could certainly accommodate a lot of development and it depends how its spread out

it just doesnt add up journalofcommerce has been wrong plenty times before, im not going to comment on this until i see the rendering. To me if a hotel is built especially in the core area of the city it has to be a high rise.. Nobody wants to stay at hotel in the core and have to look outside thier window and see drunks running bout.. car whistling by... downtown hotels should always be high rises. Especially with a project of this magnitude..

yeah, I agree we should certainly wait and see a rendering; JOBC could be wrong, there could be some typos, missing details/infos, something might not be finalized, the $300MM price-tag is an estimation of the development; we still do not have official details yet some of the proposals others have seen, have said it has the potential to look amazing

I like how the proposed start date is Jan 2013...still expecting the (potentially) same number of cranes to go up downtown, Biff?

I'm guessing the hotel is 6 storeys... The wording is kind of confusing. It mentions there is access from the ground floor... Lobby on the first floor, two floors of rooms on the same "level" as the convention centre and then 3 above.

Who knows though.

i've seen the WCC proposal, but not the hotel....i can confirm that the hotel will not be 3 stories....between 15 and 20 would be my guess.

the inuit gallery selection wont be made for a few more weeks....the designer will be a foreigner...whoever wins will just be local support....would still be an awesome project to be a part of.

i haven't seen anything regarding the MPI lots...i am as anxious as everyone!

That building on donald is one of the worst new buildings in downtown winnipeg....
