88 Scott is awful. How is it possible to like this tower when one doesn't like Trump? It has [Trump's ugliness]². It's a fucking mess!

The things I dislike the most about Trump are:

1) The colour (some sort of weird green and beige)
2) The uneven floor heights (makes it look very messy for a supposedly high-end building)
3) The tacky/cheap vibe given off by the cladding. It should have been sleek, quality curtain wall.

As far as 88 Scott goes, it's not a dull green, we have no indication it'll have uneven floor heights (or other clumsy features), and beyond the fact that it's not curtain wall, we can't really tell the quality of the materials based on just a rendering. For I personally can't see much comparison.

88 Scott is in the same PoMo style as Trump, but the problem with Trump (at least for most people) wasn't its architectural style, but its poor execution (i.e. materials, attention to detail, etc.). It's too early to write off 88 Scott.

As far as the rendering can tell, 88 Scott looks to me vastly superior to Trump.

88 could end up really classy, if done well with good materials.

I, too, much preferred the original symmetrical design, but I find this one more than acceptable.

You're likely giving people too much credit. If it's PoMo, a lot of people are going to tear a building a part regardless of quality and execution. Trump could have delivered on both counts, but was never going to be appreciated by those people because it was the 'wrong' style.

Maybe so but, the integration of the heritage facade/podium; the faked setbacks with the glass boxes, and the development team involved is more than enough to bet against this one being a stunner. Satisfactory is the best possible outcome and that's not good enough for a 200 metre tower.

PoMo peaked 20 years ago. It's expected that the top talent in the city would have moved on. We're a city with deep modernist roots as well. Pretty much only third rate full service design factories are pumping it out and it's simply not within their interest to spend extra time on the attention to detail or to convince the builder otherwise.

88 Scott is decent looking. I would welcome it into the Toronto skyline. For a start it doesn't have a 1/4 onion and pencil stuck on top. Without that Trump wouldn't be bad looking, not great, but not bad.

Why would Toronto trade mediocre with mediocre? At the very least, 88 Scott addresses the street with a midrise podium and not a one storey number with a faked second storey. You can have it. That doesn't mean you can't donate Chocalate and Centrium to make things interesting; both, I believe, are under 20 storeys and boxy.

WhipperSnapper doesn't speak for all Torontonians. Whether it replicates older styles (faux-____) or not, at least it's a deviation from the garden variety green box.

"Grey" would be more appropriate. 88 Scott would the garden variety precast and green glass box circa 2002. Anyways, yeah, I'm not a believer in variety or uniqueness if it means lesser quality which is something that seems to fall on deaf ears too often on a supposed fan site. I'm quite accepting of inspired design if its done well. This and 99% of the inspired designs are cheap knockoffs (which also applies to everything prewar that gets placed on pedestals whether deserving or not.)
