Just my opinion but i believe Las Vegas, Phoenix, Palm Springs, Orlando, Maui, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas are basically sun destinations. They are Edmontonians flying south to get away from here which says it all. For the most part, no one from these cities comes to Edmonton for business or pleasure and no one uses these airports for connections to other places.
Perhaps Phoenix could be considered an airport to transfer to other flights but i don't think WestJet codeshares with anyone in and out of Phoenix.
I would really like WestJet to compete on flights to typical business airports in the US such as Chicago or Seattle. If they start a flight to Atlanta, that's great as well. Why they don't? Not sure but i would rather fly a WS 737 than an AS Q400 to Seattle. This is basically the same point i preach over and over. Does WS offer more seats? Yes. More destinations? Yes. More destinations to business or well connected US cities? No. WS has quantity destinations but not quality.
