City airport plan moves ahead

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, September 20, 2012

City councillors took the first steps toward expropriating the City Centre Airport lands Wednesday, a process estimated to cost $80 million.

There are 198 people with interests on the land, including leases and caveats. The city will buy out anyone with airport-related businesses before it rezones the land for residential development...

High Level waterfall a step closer to making comeback

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, September 20, 2012

A plan to restart the waterfall off the High Level Bridge took a big step forward Wednesday, despite a long debate over whether to use raw river water or dechlorinated tap water.

Using river water could cost up to $2 million for the pump and intake system, but ongoing costs would be lower...

great news, I'd love to see us pump the river water, extend the nozzles a few meters in each direction and add/improve lighting.

Ideally would it run from 6am - 12am everyday from spring to fall? Or just for the evening hours? Running it during the day/evening, everyday, I feel it could become a memorable feature for residents and tourists.

I would say supper to sunset in the summer, and lit until about 10 pm in the spring and fall. On earlier on weekends and off later on festival days.

Speaking of which...

Condo project rising quickly

Bill Mah
Edmonton Journal

Friday, September 21, 2012

Rising 18 storeys above the west end of Jasper Avenue, the Pearl Tower already looms over neighbouring condo buildings and it's only halfway to its 35-floor target. The Pearl's developer shut down construction Thursday to hold a "halfway-to-the-top" celebration on the 15th floor of the tower on the south side of Jasper at 120th Street. The luxury condo project broke ground in 2010 and buyers are expected to start taking possession in 2014...

Elise Stolte
Edmonton Journal

As part I ♥ yegdt: Downtown X-Posed, and in conjunction with Alberta Culture Days, Edmonton’s downtown will be buzzing with activity during the final weekend of September.

There will be concerts, performances, tours, festivals, dancing, markets and more.
Many activities are family oriented, and most are free of charge.

As a special feature, Peter Kageyama (author of For the Love of Cities) will be presenting about cities, downtowns and how citizens engage with their places.

Please check out www.edmonton.com/downtown for more details.

Creating Great Communities – Downtown and the Burbs

While sometimes discussions about downtowns and the suburbs feel antagonistic, Peter Kageyama acknowledges that both have an important role to play in creating great communities. His approach and ideas are important for all engaged citizens to hear, regardless where they call home.

Thursday, September 27
7:00pm – 9:00pm
Startup Edmonton, 10363 – 104 Street
Event is free, but registration is required

Please check out www.edmonton.com/downtown for more details.

Peter Kageyama is an internationally recognized expert on community development and grassroots engagement. He is the author of For the Love of Cities, which explores in detail the value of emotional engagement with our cities, how that connection is created and nurtured, and how it can be turned into a development resource for places.

I love baseball, and the stadium would be less than ideal, but is there land enough to wedge a soccer field in at Telus (if the Capitals aren't coming back in some form or another of course).
