Word on the street is that Exxon sold the Dartmouth refinery with the plan of purchasing the Saint John refinery. What truth there is to that I don't know, but i'd love to see the Irving's monopoly over this province scaled back. Like you said, we need to diversify

As Myles stated, as much as the LNG terminal is useless now it won't be useless forever. Let the Americans extract and use up all of their natural gas, and then when they have the need you frack in New Brunswick and utilize the LNG terminal. The facility is already there.

I work in the sector and can assure you the saint John refinery is not for sale - its an unfortunate rumor that just won't go away. The Dartmouth refinery did not sell, but it is up for sale with the expectation that no one will buy it. It will be used as a distribution terminal. Oil refining monopoly is not an issue. You could have one refiner or three refiners in the area, the price of gas will always be the same as it is set at new York harbor prices. Besides, although there is physically one refinery, there are exchange agreements. For example, Irving supplies competitors gas stations in NB and Exxon supplies Irving stations in HRM
The issue with USA Natural gas is its abundance - 500 to 800 trillion cubic feet - which would last at current consumption of 17 years if there were no other source for USA consumers.

In spite of that though, there's an ever-increasing push toward moving non-renewable energy generation away from oil and coal and toward nat-gas. Sooner or later demand will pick up with supply and prices will rise to a more profitable level.
Unfortunately for us there is the second part of the equation - the dreaded "delivery charge" of the gas which turns a lot of people off of natural gas. I remember an ad in the paper placed by Irving and 2 other large NB companies - its a pizza delivery guy at the door. "your pizza is $12, and with delivery it comes to $50". ( or something like that)

Hey, does anyone know what's going on beside the Ultramar that's near the airport? They've cleared a good size lot right next to it, and I've heard it was going to be a Tims/Wendys, but nothing has happened in well over a year now.. I work at the airport, so a Tims/Wendy's.. really anything would have been nice..

I took these today, sorry for the quality.. Phone pics from my car on my way to work (I was parked). Hope this works..

Two observations today.
The Petro Canada at the corner of McAllister and Loch Lomond, is fenced off. Sign posted on the fence saying "This Location is now Closed, nearest Petro Canada is on Bayside Drive." The Street Sign is also gone. Looks like they are taking it apart everything that resembles the Petro Brand as well.

Also,
Canada's Car Mart on Corner of Rothesay & McAlliser has a billboard road sign saying "Moving to 160 rothesay Ave, Building for Sale or Lease"

I'm guessing now that the Oleary Group is well situated where Centennial was they are consolidating their operations there.

I was reading in the Telegraph that NB Southern Railway is planning to expand their West-side reload facilities, which would create up to 150 new jobs.

Also, the article pointed out that the Coast Guard project should break ground as soon as 2013.

Big projects coming to city's waterfront
A plan for Partridge Island is in the works. - MacIntyre

News staff Alison MorashAug 30, 2012 05:37:53 AM

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Excitement is building at Saint John Waterfront Development.

The organization is preparing to launch a slew to projects along the Saint John waterfront, including an announcement regarding the future of the former coast guard site, which is now known as Fundy Quay.

General manager Kent MacIntyre says they're talking to a specific developer and that more information will be revealed in a few weeks.

"It will be a retail, commercial and residential development, on a build out close to six acres. If everything moves along as we'd like, shovels could be in the ground in 2013."

Other waterfront projects include building ecological hubs under Harbour Bridge and a plan for Partridge Island.

The railing in of crude oil has / will create 200 new local jobs and Irving makes a lot more profit margin off of it to boot compared to Brent sea crude priced oil from ships. Talk about a home grown win/win

Anyone know who made these 3D buildings for Google Earth?

I remember a while back, davehook_729 wanted some pictures of the cruise ship terminal, so it could be done, (which it is). It'd be nice to get more of uptown done, just look at Halifax...

Yeah that was me. I have a bunch more that are 90% done but I got lazy and never finished them. I have the airport, harbour station, city hall, half of Prince William Street, Harbourfront Condos, Aliant tower, etc. but never finished them because I was missing good quality imagery of some sides and am not able to position them perfectly because of Google's lousy low-res coverage of uptown. There are surprisingly no photos of the airport parking lot side online.

I wasn't sure if that was you or not...didn't want to assume. Good work considering the quality of the pics you has to work with. I was thinking of trying my hand at some, but if the online images are crap, maybe no sense.

If I can get you some better photos, would you be interested in doing some more? I'm not in town all that much, but I can try to get you some better photos if you're still interested.

Sounds awesome, but I won't hold my breath about breaking ground in 2013 (I've been let down by these promises before). It would be great to see some renderings released when they have these announcements, fingers crossed for some high density!

The PetroCan station on the corner of McAllister & Loch Lomond is being torn down today. Anyone know why?

There's also progress being made on Technology Drive. I'll try to update that over the next few weeks.

Cabbie told a friend of mine told me that a cabbie from Dimond Taxi told them that that Hybrid Taxi is setting up on that corner.

Lounsbury furniture has really spruiced up the former Home Furniture location on Rothesay ave, renos's coming along nicely.

He says maybe the station would be more beneficial in another location.

Mayor Murray Driscoll tells CHSJ news he recognizes there's a traffic problem in various areas of the town. He says council listened to the developer and objections, and has moved the project forward to the first and second reading. Driscoll adds often traffic issues get resolved during the developers agreement.

NIMBYs in Quispamsis? Never!

Also, for how much longer can Quispamsis deal with the traffic problems before having to widen/build new roads?
